John Linder

MADISON - On Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, John F. Linder, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 87 from cancer.  His attitude throughout life was to be greatly admired and emulated.

John was born on June 30, 1937, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Walter and Anita Linder. He graduated from Random Lake High School in 1955 and Marquette University in 1959, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business. In 1977 he earned his CPA certification. John spent time in the U.S. Army both on active duty and as a reservist based out of Sheboygan, Wis.  His name was recently added to the Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial.  John put his accounting skills to use throughout his adult life for companies in Belgium, Appleton, Chippewa Falls and Madison, Wis. On May 2, 1964, he smartly married Marcia Wetor at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Dacada, Wis. They raised two daughters, Wendy and Kim, and one son, John “Jack.” John had a passion for his family. His family’s tight bond was admired by many people who knew them.  

John loved to travel with his wife, Marcy, visiting Paris, Zurich, India, Africa, much of Europe, Alaska, the Panama Canal, Russia, China and many trips around the U.S. with family and friends. John was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of Dane County. He spent many a day on the boat helping stranded boaters and assisting with various activities on Lake Mendota and Monona.  John loved to be on the water with Marcy and their family in their boat when they lived on Random Lake, Little Lake Wissota and Lake Mendota.  After Marcy’s passing on July 24, 2019, John filled his time riding his electric bike, golfing with his buddies all around southern Wisconsin, continuing his membership in the Madison Curling Club, and spending time with his children and especially his grandchildren.  

John is survived by his three children, Wendy (Don) Ray, Kim (Tom) Buckoski and Jack (Nancy) Linder; grandchildren, Grayson, Gina, Katelynne, Emma, Owen, Darren, Malcolm and Ruby; sister-in-law, Ruth (George) Alt; nieces and nephews; and many friends near and far. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter; his mother, Anita; his wife, Marcy; his siblings and in-laws, Rita and Gordon Helm, Chuck and Arlene Linder, Rosalyn and Tom Jacoby, Madelon Wetor and Mary Ann and Roger Hammes; and granddaughters, Erin and Elle Deprey.

John’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and caregivers of Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge Health and Wellness, Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge Health and Rehab and especially Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge Hospice.  We couldn’t have asked for better people to be in John’s life during these last few months.

A funeral service will be held at ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, with Father Michael Resop presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service on Monday.
