Obituary
MADISON - Richard Dennis Charles “Dick” White, age 84, of Madison, passed away peacefully at home with family at his side on Saturday, August 2, 2026. Richard was born in Chicago, Ill., on June 23, 1942, to William and Dorothy (Fagan) White. He later moved to Naperville, Ill., where he graduated from Naperville Community High School in 1960. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for one year and in the Navy for four years. He married his first wife after his time in the Navy, and they had three children together, Kevin, Janelle and David.
On October 18, 1984, Dick married Sharon Gitzlaff, his forever love, in Las Vegas, Nev. They moved to Dallas, Texas in 1989 where they lived for 30 years actively volunteering in their church community, meeting wonderful friends, and experiencing all that Texas has to offer. They ended their careers when they both retired from working for “Barbie” (Mattel) after a combined total of 34 years. The couple moved back to Wisconsin in 2018 after retiring to be closer to family.
Richard enjoyed tinkering in the garage and keeping a pristine yard. He and Sharon enjoyed traveling together. Their adventures included traveling to all 50 states, most of the Caribbean, London and Rome. Richard enjoyed spending time with family, especially during frequent family gatherings that typically ended with brownies and ice cream. Richard had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren who meant the world to him.
Richard is survived by his children and stepchildren, Kevin White, Janelle Adames, David White, Dena (Drew) Crook, Tammy Ford and Jodie (Jacques du Vair) Ryan; each of them represents an important part of his life story. They are each acknowledged with respect and compassion, recognizing that families are often complex and that every person’s experience is unique and valued. Dick is also survived by his grandchildren, Colton, Cameron, Carter and Courtney Ryan and Duncan and Danica Crook; brother, William “Bill” (Pat) White; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends and neighbors. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Sharon.
As we reflect on Dick’s life, we choose to remember the moments that brought meaning, connection, and joy, while extending grace to those who carry both cherished memories and difficult ones. May this season offer an opportunity for reflection, healing and peace for everyone whose life was touched by his.
The family would like to thank the amazing team from Agrace HospiceCare, especially Mo, who treated Richard with such wonderful care. They would also like to thank his Brightstar care team, especially Ashley, for their kindness and compassion.
A funeral service will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, Wis., at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with Pastor Dan O’Brien presiding. A luncheon will follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens at a later date.
