Obituary
MOUNT HOREB- Joyce Louise Burt Lyle, age 76, has passed out of this world and transitioned into the next life. Joyce passed away in Verona, Wis., on Sept. 24, 2024, due to complications from cerebrovascular dementia. She was born in Austin, Texas, to Leonard Lilburn Burt and Mildred Pauline Burt (Banks). The oldest of three children, Joyce reinvented herself throughout her life, awakening new talents and abilities along the way.
Joyce attended Austin High School but graduated from the newly opened Reagan High School in 1966. She then turned her natural ability to care for and comfort others into a career by graduating from Brackenridge School of Nursing and becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). One week later, Joyce married the love of her life, Jack Witherspoon Lyle, in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 9, 1969. They were married for over 55 years.
Joyce first worked in the pediatric ICU at Brackenridge Hospital where she saw up close how fragile life truly was. She then stepped away from nursing for a time when she and Jack welcomed a daughter, Amy Dyane, in 1971 and a son, Brian Christopher, two years later. Joyce was a devoted mother who understood that unconditional love, time for play, and reading to your children from infancy were of the utmost importance.
Joyce made sure that Amy and Brian were able to pursue their interests by driving them to and from hundreds of piano and ballet lessons, volleyball, soccer, baseball, and football practices and games.
Joyce was a second mother to many of Amy and Brian’s friends. She also provided unconditional care and support to anyone who crossed her path throughout her life.
During her nursing career, Joyce worked in pediatric and adult primary care clinics, at a treatment home for children who had experienced trauma, and eventually became a certified massage therapist, starting her own business. She later trained in Kundalini yoga and meditation, becoming a certified instructor in both, teaching classes for children and adults. Towards the end of her career, Joyce worked as a hospice nurse in Austin and the surrounding Hill Country, finally retiring from Agrace HospiceCare in Wisconsin, where she and Jack had moved to be closer to family.
Joyce loved nature and the natural world, especially water. Joyce was a lifelong learner of spiritual practices and an artist, like her mother. She enjoyed reading and writing poetry, singing, watercolors, and making quilts with friends. She never stopped learning.
Joyce will be loved and missed forever by so many who were touched by her gentle spirit and loving presence.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and their spouses, Leonard and Mary Burt and Mildred and Donald Banks; and her sister, Linda Burt.
Joyce is survived by the rock of the family, her husband, Jack Lyle of Mount Horeb, Wis.; daughter, Amy Lyle (Ashley Green) of Mount Horeb, Wis.; son, Brian Lyle (Colleen Walsh Lyle) of Katonah, N.Y.; brother, David Burt (Rebecca Burt) of Kempner, Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Madelyn, Brendan, Ayden, and Kait; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many loving and dear friends, as near as Mount Horeb, and as far away as Texas and Maine.
The family would like to thank Dr. Peggy Simpson - SSM Health, Lisa Aders, Jim Raab, and all of the wonderful staff at Four Winds in Verona, as well as Brittany Hudziak and the staff of Agrace HospiceCare for their compassion and care for Joyce and her family.
A celebration of Joyce’s life is planned for Spring 2025.
Libraries were a safe haven for Joyce throughout her life, and she instilled a love for reading and libraries in her children from a very young age. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce’s memory may be made by check to the Mount Horeb Public Library, 105 Perimeter Road, Mount Horeb, WI 53572.
