Obituary

MADISON - Elaine Beverly Bormann passed away unexpectedly with her family by her side on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, at University Hospital, less than a week shy of her 92nd birthday. Elaine was born on Sept. 29, 1932, in Madison, daughter of Lawrence and Marguerite (Mahoney) Prescott. She graduated from Madison East High School in 1950 and was very proud of her east side roots. Elaine worked for the Madison Police Department after graduation from high school. She met her future husband, Morrie “Fuzz” Bormann at a dance while he was stationed at Truax Field. He offered her a ride home and the courtship began. On a future date, Morrie questioned Elaine if she had given him directions for the longer route home on that first meeting, and Elaine admitted she did in order to get to know him better.

Elaine and Morrie were married in 1953 and shared 66 years of marriage until Morrie’s passing in 2019. They had two daughters who were their pride and joy. Elaine loved being a stay-at-home mom and taking care of their family. In 1960, Elaine and Morrie took a chance and started Bormann’s clothing stores. Elaine provided the names of the clothing lines the store should carry while staying home with the girls and Morrie took care of the store operations. After the girls were in high school, Elaine took on a role in the family business as the accessory buyer, purchasing and overseeing the jewelry, handbags and scarves. She had an eye for fashion and loved her job.

Elaine was an avid golfer, bowler, and a great cook. She was always collecting and trying new recipes and Sunday night family dinners were a long-standing tradition. Elaine was a long-time member at Maple Bluff Country Club and enjoyed golfing with her many friends. She absolutely loved and adored her only grandchild, Jordan, and was so proud of him. Elaine and Morrie loved their many special times with Jordan at Gull Lake in Minnesota and the annual spring breaks Jordan spent in Arizona.

Elaine is survived by her daughters, Pam Bormann and Betsy (Stuart) Zadra; her grandson, Jordan Zadra; her special cousins, Deanna (Dennis) Gervasi and Jill Schermerhorn; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Prescott and sister-in-law Carol Prescott, sister-in-law Thelma Thilges and brother-in-law Edwin Thilges.

Private services will be held. In lieu of memorials, we ask you to perform an act of kindness in our mom’s honor.

We thank our mom for all the values she instilled in us and for making us who we are today. FAMILY always came first, and we were so fortunate to enjoy family vacations with our parents, including spring break golf trips to Doral Country Club in Miami, fishing trips to Lake of the Woods and annual summer vacations to Madden’s Lodge on Gull Lake. Elaine and Morrie were great role models for us and have passed those meaningful values down to their grandson. While Elaine’s passing was unexpected, it helps our healing process to know she lived a full and bountiful life.

The Scott boys met the Bormann girls at Madden Lodge sometime in the early ‘60’s. Parents Elaine and Morrie, and Scotty and Audrey shared interests in golf, fishing, nature, and family. Madden’s provided a healthy dose of all. Water skiing is what connected their children. Pam and Betsy, and Dick, Tom, and, Jimmy, all skied (yes 5 of us at the same time) behind Bormann’s coolest gold Inland 160hp boat. Both families loved the area so much that they built summer retreats and added to the endless memories. Elaine’s passing brings tears to our eyes, but also a smile thinking about our parents in a heavenly foursome at Pine Beach East, and maybe taking that gold boat to Bar Harbor, or trolling for walleye on Gull Lake at night. God’s loving peace to Pam, and Betsy, Stu, and Jordan. Jim and Donna

Our deepest condolences to Pam, Betsy, Stuart, and Jordan on the loss of your Mom/Grandmother. While we did not have the pleasure/privilege to meet her, if the adage that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree is true, she must have been a wonderful/remarkable person in many ways. Your parents were part of the foundation people/families that made Monona such a special place when we grew up. We were very fortunate to have such great role models as them. With deepest sympathy, Bruce and Mary Iverson
