Obituary

MADISON - Richard LeRoy Hanson, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on May 6, 1932, in Madison, Wis., the son of Henry and Irene (Becker) Hanson.


Richard graduated from Madison East High School in 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at Tachikawa AFB in Japan and Clark AFB in the Philippines. On Dec. 26, 1955, he married Mary (Willis) Hanson, who preceded him in death.


Richard enjoyed a long career as a postal worker for the US Postal Service, retiring in December of 1988. In his free time, he enjoyed gambling and watching sports, especially Wisconsin Badgers Basketball and the Milwaukee Brewers. He also enjoyed watching classic movies such as Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.


Richard is survived by his sons, Robert (Shannon) Hanson, Jeff (Beth) Hanson and James (Veni) Hanson; sister, Diane Dugan; brother, David (Scharon) Hanson; granddaughter, Sandra Piedra; great-granddaughter, Londyn; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; brothers, Craig Hanson and Bruce Hanson; and sisters, Gloria Denruiter and Judy Seim.


A graveside service with military honors will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024.
