Obituary

DURAND / LA CROSSE - Mary Jane Schomburg, 91, passed away peacefully at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg, Wis., on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024.

Mary Jane was born in Durand, Wis., on May 10, 1933, to Henry and Helen (Liddy) Nicklas. She graduated from Durand High School and then attended the school of nursing at St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn., where she made several life-long friends and became a Registered Nurse.

She met Ronald Schomburg when he was home on leave from the U.S. Air Force. They were married in Durand on Dec. 28, 1955. He attended UW-Madison to pursue an Engineering degree, and she continued her nursing career at Madison General Hospital. When he graduated, they moved to La Crescent, Minn., where he began a career with the Trane Company and she continued hers at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis. Later in her career she worked in the Student Health Clinic at UW-La Crosse.

Mary Jane and Ron were very active in the community and made many friends there. Mary Jane’s leisure time was spent playing golf and bridge with friends and with Ron. After Ron's retirement, they purchased a cabin on Lake Arbutus where wonderful memories were made with friends and family. In 2006, she moved to Onalaska, Wis., into a retirement community to be near some of her closest friends. Her weekly highlight was the neighborhood Wednesday Wine Group. She continued to enjoy playing Mahjong, bridge and an occasional round of golf with friends.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Schomburg; parents, Henry and Helen Nicklas; brothers, James Nicklas and Roger Nicklas; and sister, Denice Goodrich.  She is survived by her daughter, Lee Ann (Michael) Dillis; son, John (Susan) Schomburg; grandchildren, Robert (Becky) Dillis, Christopher (Madeline) Schomburg and Alan (Allie) Schomburg; and great-grandchildren, Ezra, Avi and Jonah Schomburg.

So sorry to hear of Mary Jane’s passing. I met her at Noel Manor where I used to work. She was always so kind and lovely. She will be dearly missed. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Schomburg family. John & I were classmates from grades 2-12. Mary Jane was always kind, welcoming, and interested in what we boys were up to. She was one of the “Memorable Moms” from my youth. It was an honor and privilege to know her.

Dear Schomburgs, I just found a letter Nik sent to my dad after mom died. Unfortunately Dad died earlier that year (2020), and I never got a response out to her. Finding the card again just now, I thought I’d see if she was still with us and see that I just missed her. I am happy she is with her dear friend Jean. All the Regans send love your way as you celebrate her spunky self this Christmas. I hope all the memories keep your spirits bright. With love, Katie Regan Nath. Daughter of Jean Joyce Regan, UST ‘55
