MADISON - Susan Lynn “Sue” Kass, age 71, passed away tragically on August 20, 2024, while spending time at her beloved lake home in Hazelhurst, Wis. A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Sue's sudden loss has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her.

Sue was born on Nov. 24, 1952, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Harold and Jacklyn (Reeder) Adler. She lived a life full of love, laughter, and compassion. She and her husband, Kim, built a life together in Cedarburg, Wis., and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They raised two sons, Dr. David (Colleen) and Erik (Katie). Sue's passion was her four grandchildren, Blake (13), Ella (12), Aspen (11) and Avalon (8) who brought her endless joy. She treasured every moment with them, leaving behind memories they will carry forever.


Sue is also survived by her sister, Dr. Karen Adler-Fischer, and her children, Dr. Matt, Jon, Katie and their spouses; her brother, Mike Adler (Michele Schmitz); sister-in-law, Jill Kass; lifelong best friend, Kris Flanagan; and dear cousin, Mary Joanis. She will be sadly missed by her close-knit Madison East high school friends “The Girls,” Kris, Nancy, Kathy, Connie, Kathy, Jane, Peg, Karen; “The Belles of Belmont Lane” in Oconomowoc; and fellow snowbirds in Port Aransas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Harold “Hap” and Jackie Adler.

Sue was an avid sports fan cheering on all Wisconsin teams. A formidable opponent in board and card games, and she was often found indulging in a good puzzle or book. She was a great cook and enjoyed finding new recipes to share with her family and friends.


The lake home was a place of peace and happiness for Sue, where she spent countless hours surrounded by the beauty of nature, her beloved hummingbirds, and the love of her family. She enjoyed gardening, pontoon rides, and walking the trails with Kim and their lab Finley. Her fiery spirit, generosity, and infectious smile will be deeply missed by all.

Sue’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her immediate family, especially her grandchildren, and the many friends and extended family members who were fortunate enough to have known her.


A memorial service to celebrate Sue's life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Sue’s final resting place will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Sue was very helpful to my first year of teaching at Brown Deer Elementary. She made me feel very comfortable and answered many of my questions as a person new to the building. Needless to say we developed a great professional relationship that then developed a great friendship as well. I got to know Sue's family as well as she got to know my family as well. With her being a big time Packer fan and me being a Cowboy fan, there was plenty of chatter going on during the football season. We especially enjoyed our conversations of the show Melrose Place. Sue and the rest of the Kass family made my transition moving from Beloit one filled with comfort and happiness. Sue's big heart was very beneficial to my family and I, she also shared her passion of helping others with the countless number of students and staff members she served for many years at Brown Deer Elementary school. We all are very fortunate to have Sue in our lives.

Kim, What a tragedy. I am so sorry this happened to you and your family. It is ironic that both peace and serenity and dreadful heartbreak can all be associated with our beloved homes in Hazelhurst. We always looked forward to pontoon visits from the Kass family. It came with barking dogs, lots of smiles and memories of growing up on the lake. We are holding you all in our hearts

Sue, Kim and the family were always fun visitors on Lake Katherine. Watching their boys water ski and our many dogs meeting their dogs! My arms are around all of you during this very tragic time. Love Carolyn

Kim was a pharmacy intern back in the early 70’s. That’s when I met Susan, they invited us for dinner at there home in Brown Deer. We ended up going to the wrong home. We all had a good laugh with that. Deepest sympathy to Kim and family. Wayne Oberlander

Dear Kim, David, and Eric, I want to send my sincere sympathy to you and your entire family. Sue was a special friend at Dean Elementary School and helped so many kids and teachers as she worked there. Of course I knew her as an interested mother of her 2 boys in my music classes and programs. What a tragic way to say goodbye to this world! Now you have an angel looking over you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
