Obituary

MIDDLETON - Dennis A. Powell, age 77, of Middleton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Oct. 28, 1946, in Madison, Wis., the son of Alexious and Vera (Nonn) Powell.

Dennis graduated from La Follette High School in 1967. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, entering the service on Aug. 17, 1967, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 15, 1969.  He received the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with One Bronze Star, Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, Marksman Badge with Pistol Bar, Expert Marksmanship Badge with Mortar Bar, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. He was a proud member of American Legion Post No. 245.

On Feb. 21, 1987, Dennis married Louise Breunig in Martinsville, Wis. He enjoyed a long career as an operator, working for over 35 years at the Bruce Company. He overcame many hurdles in his life, which helped define who he became later in life. In his free time, he enjoyed wood working, fishing, chopping wood, day trips, and watching all sports, including the Brewers, Packers, Bucks and Badgers. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Louise; children, Becky (Casey) Balousek and Tim (Kelly) Powell; grandchildren, Mae Powell, Maryn Powell, Harper Balousek and Weston Balousek; brother, Dave (Anna) Powell; sisters, Rosie Moran, Donna Thiele and Cathy (Gary) Koltes; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, at 12 noon on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. Interment will follow at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Martinsville, Wis., with full military honors. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

Dennis' family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff at the VA Hospital for all the kind and compassionate care they gave him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the VA Hospital or American Legion Post 245 would be appreciated by the family.
