Obituary

WATERLOO - Susan M. Bakken, age 80, of Waterloo, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Agrace HospiceCare surrounded by her closest family at her side. She was born on Sept. 4, 1943, in Columbus, Wis., the daughter of George and Gertrude (Linck) Yerges.

Sue was united in marriage to Roger D. Bakken on June 1, 1968. They had their first home in downtown Waterloo. They were blessed with a daughter, Karla, in 1972 and later built their dream home in the early 80s.

Sue taught 4th grade in the Waterloo School District for 33 years. In the beginning of her career, she became an advocate for Women's Rights. She fought hard for herself and future female teachers who were starting families, to have a maternity leave and return to their same job.

In 1997, Roger was diagnosed with cancer and passed away after a brief battle. Sue retired shortly Roger's passing and she began focusing on her favorite pass times, such as collecting antiques and other unique items. Her sister, Judy, lived with her and together they spent many hours perfecting basket weaving. Eventually, Sue bought a smaller log cabin on the lake in Cambridge, Wis.

Sue always enjoyed her pets. She would talk about all the dogs she's had over the years, from her childhood dog, Sandy to her latest, a Yorkshire Terrier, named Molly.

Sue had a very fulfilling life. Unfortunately, she struggled with many health issues later in life.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Karla S. (Larry) Korb; sister, Kathleen (E.G.) Becker; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger; and sister, Judith Yerges.

In keeping with Sue's wishes, no services will be held.  Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare in Sue’s name. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.

The family of Bernadine Hensler sends our deepest condolences to Karla and all of Sue’s loved ones. Sue and Roger were near and dear friends of the late Bernie and Wayne. Sue and Bernie taught school together and remained great friends through the years, sharing many stories and adventures. We wish comfort and peace to Sue’s family during this difficult time.
