Obituary
BLACK EARTH - Gerald “Jerry” Poe passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, surrounded by his family, in the Hospice Unit of the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.
Jerry had a full and rewarding career in the military, first serving in the U.S. Navy and then re-enlisting in the U.S. Army, eventually ending his career in the U.S. Special Forces. After his military career he had a successful and fulfilling career owning and operating his own business after which he and his wife, Dianne, enjoyed retirement.
His love of country was reflected in the many organizations he was a member of and his help with the yearly Wayne Horner Stand Down Event helping veterans that were experiencing or were at risk of homelessness. These organizations included being a life member of the Mount Horeb Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9511, Mount Horeb Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans (Chapter IV), Black Earth American Legion Post 313, Great Lakes Special Forces Association (Chapter 73) and the National Special Forces Association, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Dianne Poe; son, Nathan (Anne) Poe; grandchildren, Katie Poe, Kila Poe, Joe (Annie) White and Corissa VanTassel; sisters, Joanne (Dan) Ward, and Theresa (George) Walton; brother, Jerry (Constance) Poe; sister-in-law, Karalee (Gene) Turk; bothers-in-law, Daniel Kerl and David (Judy) Kerl; and many extended family members on both sides.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra (Tim) Currier; sister, Nancy (Dale) Beaver; brothers, George (Jean) Poe Jr., and Marlin (Charlotte) Poe; mother, Ida (Kerstetter, Poe) Harnen; father, George Poe Sr.; step-father, Tom Harnen; and parents-in-law, Norbert and Wylina (Evert) Kerl.
A celebration of life will be held at VFW Post 9511, 2787 Erbe Road, Blue Mounds, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024.
