Obituary
MONONA - Lois A. Opsal, age 95, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024. Lois was born on Oct. 29, 1928, in Sibley, Iowa, to Arlie and Minnie (Scheu) Harper. As a child, Lois moved with her family to Hastings, Neb., where she grew up and graduated from high school. After marrying, she and her family moved to Monona, Wis.
Lois worked incredibly hard her whole life providing and caring for her family. She showed immense strength, never complained and was an exceptionally positive influence in her children’s lives. She was always there to support them.
Lois enjoyed working for WPS as a medical fraud investigator, retiring after more than 25 years. She loved traveling with friends and family, reading, listening to music, planting flowers and baking. Lois was a great supporter of her grandchildren and all their activities. She never missed a musical performance or sporting event, always in the crowd or audience. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved family celebrations. Lois was never afraid to speak her mind, loved to laugh and treated everyone with respect. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, from a Beefeater at The Tower of London to a stranger at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Lois is survived by her children, Steve (Ann Fritzges) Opsal of San Diego, Calif., Cindy (Mike) Swanson of Verona, Wis., and Todd (Amy Ahrens) Opsal of Mount Horeb, Wis.: grandchildren, Michael (Meaghan) Swanson of Cottage Grove, Wis., Erin (Kevin) Singer of McFarland, Wis., Kim Opsal of San Diego, Calif., Tanya (Chris) Opsal of San Diego, Calif., and Sierra (JJ) Bucher of Mount Horeb, Wis.; and great-grandchildren, Hadley, Benny, Abby, Avery, Liv, Reagan and Halen. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Betters; and brother, James Harper.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Marlan Harper, Merle Harper, Virginia Stang, Arliss Reiber and Dianne Wallace; and grandson, Chris Opsal.
Her family will have a private celebration of her life in September and share many wonderful memories.
We would like to give a very special thank you to the staff at Agrace Hospice, especially Nicole and Loretta, for their kindness and care over the last many months. Memorials may be made in Lois’s memory to Agrace Foundation, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
