Obituary

MIDDLETON - Helen Marie May, age 90, of Middleton, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at UW Hospital and Clinics. She was born on July 16, 1933, in Pekin, Ill., the daughter of Michael and Nellie (Scamp) Nellos.


Helen grew up in Pekin and graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1951.  She married Robert Hoerr, also of Pekin, in 1953 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a homemaker while raising two sons, Dave and Doug, and later worked at Bergner’s Department Store, where she rose to department manager. In 1988 she married Stanley May in Peoria, Ill.


Helen enjoyed music, the outdoors, long walks, good food (especially Greek food), dogs and cats, and time with her family and friends. She was an active member of the Pekin Civic Chorus, participating in several musical productions, and was also a member of the Melody Mamas choral group. She was a regular attendee at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Catholic Church for the past several years.


Helen is survived by her sons, Dave Hoerr and Douglas Hoerr: granddaughter, Wini Phelps; great-grandson, Niko Phelps; her daughters-in-law, Mary Hoerr and Andrea Hoerr; many cousins in Greece; and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert and Stanley; her sister, JoAnn; and brother, George.


A Funeral Mass will be held at ST. MARY OF PINE BLUFF CATHOLIC CHURCH, 3673 County Road P, Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024, with the Rev. Brian Dulli officiating.
