Obituary

Evansville - Ronald E. Scott, age 67, of Evansville, passed away peacefully with family by his side, on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on Dec. 7, 1956, in Madison, Wis., the son of Robert and Matilda (Kraemer) Scott.

Ronald attended Immaculate Heart of Mary grade school and graduated from Monona Grove High School. On April 27, 2016, he married Darleen (Palfrey) Scott in Janesville, Wis. Ronald worked as a store manager for Dorn True Value Hardware for over 42 years, retiring in September 2019.

Ron was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, biking, kayaking, traveling, taking road trips, tent camping, canoeing and swimming. He was fond of exploring in his canoe while on excursions to the Boundaries Waters, Turtle-Flambeau Flowage and Devil's Lake, later switching to kayaking and paddle boating. He swam from the south shore to the north shore at Devil's Lake. Recently, Ron went on day trips to attend the EAA fly-in.

Ron enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with others. He was involved with Pack 30 Cub Scouts and with Troop 34 Boy Scouts while raising both of his sons. He looked forward to camping with his brothers for the annual Scott Brothers Week. Ron, RJ and Ron's brother, George, took a trip to Yellowstone National Park. He and his brother, Larry, ventured on many hiking and day trips. Ron and his wife, Darleen, traveled to the Rockies, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, the Smokey Mountains and Florida, where they would join his brother, Joe, and family. They also loved traveling around the state to see state and county parks. Ron delighted in taking Darleen to new places. Some of Ron and his family’s favorite activities included attending the auto races in Sun Prairie and Elkhart Lake and visiting state parks, with Devil's Lake being their favorite.

For indoor activities, he would take his sons roller skating at the RollerDrome and swimming at the MATC pool. He enjoyed watching RJ play sports and watching Kenny perform in the Madison East pep band during football, basketball and hockey games. Ron also attended concert band performances, including chaperoning the band to Florida for a competition. Spending time with his grandchildren and attending their school and sporting events brought Ron much joy. He also loved his puppies, Megan, Tucker and Izzy.

Ron started a tradition of celebrating family birthdays at the Nitty Gritty in 1996. Many memories were made over breakfast with his siblings at The Jet Room at Dane County Airport. Ron enjoyed cooking meals on his Weber grill and making his family’s German Potato Salad.

Ron was very good at fixing things. He always had a good idea of how to repair many things, ranging from household items to cars, and was always on the lookout for unique gadget tools. Ron enjoyed model trains and railroad, attending the shows in Madison and visiting train museums. Ron was a season ticket holder for UW Men's Hockey for 10+ years! GO Badgers!

Ron is survived by his wife, Darleen; sons, Ken (Jessica) Scott and Ron Scott; grandchildren, Calista, Alex, Samantha and Abby Scott, and Collin Gregor-Scott; brothers, Robert (Mary) Scott and Joe (Connie) Scott; and his former wife, Kim Andruss. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Larry Scott and George Scott; sister, Doris A. Heller; sister-in-law, Kathy (Ballweg) Scott, brother-in-law, Butch Heller; and nephew, Michael Scott.

A celebration of life will be held at Ron’s home on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Thank you to the UW Transplant team, the TLC Unit and the staff on the Transplant floor for the care they provided to Ron during his 63 day stay.
