Obituary

QUINCY, Ill. / MADISON, Wis. - Dorothy Ann “Dotty” Heinecke, age 86, of Madison, Wis., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Eden Vista Assisted Living. Born on July 27, 1939, in Kinderhook, Ill., Dotty was the daughter of Jay and Mary Lucille (Moore) Smith.

A special part of Dotty’s story began in a fourth-grade classroom at Emerson School, where she met a boy named Dale Heinecke- a childhood friendship that blossomed into a lifelong love. Both proud graduates of the Quincy High School Class of 1957, Dotty and Dale married on November 27, 1963, and shared over 60 years of devotion, partnership, and affection. Their reunion now brings comfort to all who cherished them.

Dotty built a meaningful and varied career, managing two credit unions with a steady hand and sincere care for the people she served. But it was her many years working as a pharmacy technician at Brown Drug, where her dedication and kindness created lifelong friendships with colleagues and customers alike. Dotty had a gift for making people feel remembered, valued, and welcome; qualities that shaped every workplace she touched.

Family was at the very center of Dotty’s life. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Hanna, and embraced her son-in-law, Ted, as her own. Her heart grew even fuller with the arrival of her grandsons, Benjamin and William, who brought her endless pride and joy. Intelligent and curious, Dotty nurtured a deep love of reading in her family and championed the importance of education. Dotty also loved cooking. She will be remembered for the joy she found in pouring over her vast cookbook collection and creating from-scratch recipes that became treasured family favorites.

Music was a source of comfort and connection throughout Dotty’s life. She treasured her time singing in school and church choirs, and in her later years, she found profound joy in hearing her grandsons’ orchestra performances. She also cherished annual family vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks and found peace in the beauty of the outdoors. At home, she took great joy in the simple pleasure of watching birds at her feeders, finding contentment in nature’s quiet moments.

Dotty leaves behind not only the memories she created, but countless gifts that will continue to guide those who loved her: her unwavering love, her quick wit and sense of humor, her strong work ethic, and her steadfast dedication to doing what was right. These pieces of her spirit remain woven into the lives she touched.

Dotty is survived by her daughter, Hanna (Ted) Blazel; grandsons, Benjamin and William Blazel; sister, Diana Mixer; brother, David (Linda) Smith; sister-in-law, Kay (Steve) Ginther; and lifelong best friend, Elizabeth Weber. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dale; brother, Donald (Phyllis) Smith; brothers-in-law, Ken Mixer and Eugene (Frances Ann) Heinecke; and sisters-in-law, Frances (George) Keppner and Helen (Harry) Smith.

A graveside service honoring and celebrating both Dotty and Dale will take place at GREENMOUNT CEMETERY, 1701 S. 12th St., Quincy, Ill., at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Military Honors will be performed for Dale immediately following the service. The family takes comfort in knowing that Dotty and Dale are together again-this time, forever.

Dorothy and I were friends for almost 80 years. I can't begin to share my memories because they would fill a book. She was a very special person and a very important part of my life all these years. Hanna has always been my niece and I love her as much as I would if she really was my niece. I spent so many holidays and vacations with my "family". I watched Hanna grow up and become the very special person that she is. I sang for their wedding and was Maid of Honor. She was Maid of honor at my wedding. We were always there for each other. She and Dale were a very special couple and always treated me like family. Words can't say how I feel at losing her. There is a hole in my heart where she will always be. Love, Liz Weber
