Obituary

MADISON - Daniel E. Olson, age 62, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, leaving behind a broken-hearted family. He was born on July 21, 1961, the son of Walton and Bernice (Anderson) Olson in Stoughton.

Dan was the youngest of seven children and grew up helping his family on the farm or working on projects around the house. He discovered his love for fixing things at a young age. Dan graduated from Oregon High School in 1979. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was a long-time member of the Operating Engineers Local 139.

Chances are you have driven over at least one road or parking lot that Dan had worked on. He loved to point out his handy work if he was in the car with you. He was a wealth of knowledge when it came to anything building related, and there was truly nothing that he could not do. This talent was especially beneficial to his daughter, who knew that she could always call her Dad when something needed to be fixed. His final act of love was grading his daughter’s backyard so that his grandkids could have the best backyard for playing.

Dan was one of the hardest working people that you could ever meet. When not at work, he would help his family, friends, and neighbors with projects, no matter how big or small. He spent his winters remodeling houses and traveling to Texas to visit his sister, Beth (where he would then help her with projects that she had saved for him). Dan’s motto was basically this:

“If it’s broken, I can fix it.

If you need it, I can build it.

If you don’t know what you need, I do!”

He loved being a grandpa and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He was at every weekly gymnastics class and didn’t want to miss a second of their lives.  He was also a frequent babysitter, and his grandchildren loved him dearly.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Mikaela (Kraig) Hohf; grandchildren, Blake and Calvin Hohf; brothers, Douglas (Mary) Olson and Dean (Dana) Olson; sisters, Beth (Steve) Sokolyk and Bonnie (Jeff) Lofley; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walton and Bernice; and brothers, David Olson and Dale (Cathy) Olson.

An open house style, celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the home of Dean and Dana Olson, 905 Highway MM, Oregon, Wis. Come as you are.

In lieu of flowers, his daughter requests that you bring a written memory of a repair that Dan did on your property or a project that he helped you with.

As a kitchen and bath designer I had the great pleasure of working with Dan on personal projects as well as projects for his clients. I enjoyed the long conversations that we would have talking about anything and everything. He always spoke of his daughter and when doing so his smile showed how much he loved and cherished her. Once grandkids came along he would share stories and pictures of them with me. He grinned from ear to ear when talking about them. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with the family and this very difficult time. Dan will always be in the hearts of those that knew him. Deepest Sympathy. Kari Taylor

Dan came to my house and business a number of times to fix things. He loved to talk and we had many interesting conversations. He was thin and appeared healthy and the picture posted here is wonderful. I know how he liked helping his daughter and son-in-law and expected many more years to do so, with special love and attention for his grandchildren. I will miss his fine work. Louise Googins

I used to work with "Dinger" (That's what we called him) at DRS Services back in the 80's. He was a good finisher with the roller. I also went to school with him. He was a good guy. Good memories. Sorry for your loss.
