Obituary

MADISON - Joyce C. (nee Uitvlugt) Kabler, a cherished mother, nana, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024, in Fitchburg, Wis., just two days shy of her 76th birthday. Born on May 27, 1948, in Chicago, Ill., Joyce's vibrant spirit and loving nature touched the lives of all who knew her.

Joyce grew up in the bustling city of Chicago, where she attended East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, graduating with the class of 1966. Her formative years in the Windy City instilled in her a lifelong love for the Chicago Cubs, a passion she would carry with her throughout her life.

Joyce had a fulfilling career with Pleasant Company, where she dedicated over two decades of service. During her time there she formed many lasting friendships that she treasured deeply. She retired in 2015.

Joyce is survived by her loving daughters, Erika (J.P.) Uren and Brenda (Jake) Buss; her adored grandchildren, Madison Uren, Isaac Buss, Aidan Buss, and Evan Buss; sisters, Karen (Rich) Fulton and Linda Uitvlugt; and niece, Sara (Mike Roberts) Fulton. Joyce's role as a mother and nana was one she embraced with all her heart, cherishing every moment spent with her daughters and reveling in the joy of supporting her grandchildren in their various events and milestones.

Preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Doris Uitvlugt, Joyce's memory will be cherished and kept alive by the family and friends she leaves behind. Visitation will be held at OLBRICH BOTANICAL GARDENS, EVJUE COMMONS ROOM, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison, Wis., from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2024, with a time of remembrances beginning at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Agrace HospiceCare at Agrace.org/Donate. I am beyond grateful to have spent my formative years around such a fun and loving mom, to a a couple of amazing women. We shared so many laughs and great times at Cubs games, which I will never forget. Super grateful for a recent last hug, smile and giggle. My truest and sincerest condolences to all. How lucky to be loved by Joyce. All my love, Janis

OH JOYCE, we were so fortunate! We grew up in River Grove, where the village elders understood and appreciated that girls also needed activities in the summertime, and Filly League 16” Softball was conceived. The left side of our field was especially well covered. You played a “sure out” third base, Susie Haugen was a “well” in left field, and I did my best to secure the outs at short stop. Most evenings we were either on a field practicing or playing a game at Rhodes or River Grove grade schools. “Those were the days!” I appreciated those formative skills going on to play fast pitch in college and beyond. Further, I see RG continued to evolve and now offers several levels of Rockets fast pitch for its girls. Bless them! While we weren’t in touch all these years, we did have a conversation at a WI Badger women’s volleyball match when you attended with one of your girls. That surely was a few minutes ago. And later, I called to help you celebrate the Cubs’ World Series 2016 win. (The Uitvlugt TV always had a game on.) When I called your mom answered the phone, we had a lovely chat, and she made sure I could call when you’d be at home. “Cubs win!” Thank you for your sure-handedness, your friendship, and all the joy we shared in our youths. With love and fondest memories, Chris Frank

I was lucky enough to grow up in the house next to Joyce and her family on Oak Street. Not only that, we were relatives! My dad Al was the brother of Joyce’s mom Doris. Joyce was two years older than me and was always kind. Except once when her kid sister Linda and I were walking to school and she decided to walk 100 feet in front of us because we weren’t cool enough. Joyce was smart and athletic and a big baseball fan. Go Cubs! - unless they’re playing the SF Giants. Joyce was also a great middle sister to Linda and Karen, and a wonderful daughter to my Auntie Dor and Uncle Frank, and a loving Mom and Grandmother. My condolences go out to Erika and Brenda and their families, and, Linda, Karen, Rich and Sara. I will miss Joyce but will always have beautiful memories. Much love ❤️Judy
