Obituary

Madison - Robert J. Miller, age 90, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at his home. He was born on June 7, 1933, in Madison, Wis., the son of Paul and Frances (Littel) Miller. He was married to his best friend, the girl of his dreams, Audrey (Mueller) Miller, on July 13, 1957, in Independence, Wis. Together they had five children and eight grandsons, who were always uppermost on his mind.

Bob had a busy life. When he wasn’t working at home, he was always playing sports - baseball, football, basketball, tennis, boxing, biking, ping pong, pool - you name it, he could play it. During middle school and high school, Bob helped his parents in their grocery store, which continued after high school until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country for two years during the Korean War.  After his discharge, he spent four years in an apprenticeship with Electric Motors Unlimited. Later he worked at the U.W. for 33 years as an electrician.

After retirement his busy life continued. He helped other retired electricians with volunteer jobs, such as Three Gaits Horse Farm office building, Vilas Zoo Spook House, wiring and de-wiring, and the Holiday Lights at Olin Park. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels every Wednesday for three years and was a truck volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul every Monday for six years, plus he worked with the Knights of Columbus at U.W. basketball and football stands as well as at their Tootsie Roll sales. On top of all this, he was a church choir member forever. Amen!!

Bob is survived by his wife, Audrey; daughters, Melinda Rau and Rebecca (Scott) Lehman, son, Brad (Julie) Miller, and daughter, Debra (Dave) Perkl; eight grandsons, Justin (Kristin) Rau, Joshua (Laura) Rau, Benjamin (Lisa) Lehman, Nicholas (Elizabeth) Perkl, Zachary (Nikki) Miller, Lucas (Colleen) Perkl, Jack Perkl and Ian Miller; five great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Bollig; sister-in-law, Marian McChesney; brother-in-law Curtis (Marge) Mueller; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jerry Miller; five sisters and one brother; as well as many dear in-laws.

Great memories of Uncle Bob’s laugh. There is no other! I loved watching my dad (Uncle Mac) and Uncle Bob serve up the martini in style. Uncle Bob was so good and gentle! He was always interested in what we were doing. A great loving and kind man! Sending love and prayers. I can hear him and Jerry laughing and loving from the great beyond! Marga McChesney

It was always a good time to golf with Bob, Good conversation, and good golf. He hit it in the center of the fairway on every drive, I never saw him lose a ball. I asked him how long he’d been using the same ball, and if he ever planned to retire it and start with a new one. I think he told me it wasn’t broken in yet.
