Obituary

MADISON - Thomas Stephen Streber, age 78, of Madison, Wis., passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at his home. He was born on Aug. 8, 1945, in Madison, the son of Frederick and Vivian (Bennett) Streber.

Tom was a lifelong resident of Madison. He graduated from East High School in 1963 and married Diane Farley on June 4, 1966. He went on to apprentice and become a proud member of Steamfitter’s Local No. 394, aka, Local No. 601, where he was devoted to his union brothers and sisters and spent his entire career as a steamfitter. He worked as a steamfitter for the State of Wisconsin for many years at the UW Hospital, retiring in 2000.

He was very social and had an extremely close-knit group of lifelong friends. Tom spent many years going fishing in Canada and deer hunting with the same group of guys. He was the life of the party and enjoyed entertaining and socializing with friends and family. He was also a die-hard Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. Once retired, Tom discovered a love of travel, with a fondness for Europe and Ireland, where he could indulge his appreciation of good food and good beer. He loved cars, particularly Corvettes, and was thrilled when he was finally able to buy his own Corvette. Above all, he took particular pride in being “Paca” to his grandchildren, and he could often be heard bragging about them and their accomplishments to his many friends.

Tom is survived by his children, Shannon Streber of Madison, Brent Streber (Noriko Shiomi) of Kyoto, Japan, Danielle Varnell (Robert) of Annapolis, Md., and Lindsay Streber (Scott Dahlhauser) of Madison; grandchildren, Isabella Cruz of Chicago, William, Anna and Maria Varnell, each of Annapolis, Md., and Grant and Tyler Dahlhauser each of Madison, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Diane; sister, Diane Rappe; and parents, Vivian and Frederick Streber, all of Madison.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Shannon, Brent, Danielle, Lindsay and family, I've been thinking about all of you. Tom was a character. He always made me laugh when I was at your house. Over the past several years, I would run into him at Woodmans or the Metro Market. Your dad was so friendly and easy to talk to. Hugs to all of you.
