Obituary
MIDDLETON - Luana (Simon) Kalscheur, age 92, of Middleton, Wis., died on May 18, 2024, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born in February of 1932 to Herman and Sally (Endres) Simon of Middleton, Wis. Luana was a 1950 graduate of Middleton High School. She was employed as a secretary at the Wisconsin Bar Association, was co-owner of several family businesses with her husband and retired from the supply department of St. Mary’s Hospital.
At the age of eight, Luana fell from a tall slide onto the concrete at a Middleton school. After a long recovery with lots of prayers from the community, she fully recovered from a serious skull fracture. She always said that every day after that was a blessing and she found joy in even the simplest activities such as smelling flowers or grass, laying on a pier, cooking marshmallows on a campfire. In the early ‘70s, Luana bravely faced and overcame thyroid cancer through treatments at the Mayo Clinic.
She was not one to gossip, looked for the good in all and did not pass judgement on others. Luana’s hobbies included walking, reading, gardening, and drinking coffee. Luana enjoyed time with her family and friends at their home in the country and their cabin at the lake. She enjoyed going to Badger games with friends and family.
Luana took pleasure in the simple things in life: watching the many birds, especially the cardinals, that flocked to her birdfeeders, curling up with a good book, combing for driftwood and boating on Lake Petenwell. She was treasured by her many grandchildren and proudly advertised this with her Granny Lu vanity plates. She enjoyed tailgating at Badger football games with Donny and their closest friends, cheering on the men’s basketball team and even their opponents, and hosting many a Lovely Ladies Luncheons with her sisters and best friends. She will always be remembered for her kind heart. She never spoke badly of anyone. She went out of her way to make her family and friends feel welcome and loved. Even during the final months of her life, she smiled often, thanked family and friends for visiting her, and never failed to thank the caretakers at All Saints and Agrace for their kind care. She taught us the importance of appreciating what’s right in front of you be that a glorious sunset, a dish of ice cream, or a hug.
Luana is survived by her children, Kathy (Miles) Hoover, David (Kristine) Kalscheur, William (Peggy) Kalscheur and Karen (Mike) Jensen; daughter-in-law, Jann Kalscheur; 13 grandchildren, Brian and Brad, Ben and Matt, Megan, Jeff, Sally, and Joe, Mark and Laura, Jill, Robin and Annie; ten great grandchildren; sister, Louise Oasen; brother-in-law, Wayne Esser; sister-in-law, Sharon (Dick) Sersch; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and high school sweetheart, Donald; son, Gary Kalscheur; brother, Gerald Simon; and sisters, Janet Esser and Marjorie Sawyer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton, at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, with Father Brian Dulli presiding.
