Obituary

MIDDLETON - Barbara (Holmes) Puls, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Two Rivers, Wis., on May 21, 1934, the daughter of Ruth and Herbert Holmes.

Barbara graduated from Middleton High School in 1952 and embarked on a journey of love and dedication when she married the love of her life, Otto Puls, on June 4, 1955.

Professionally, Barbara's career spanned diverse roles, each undertaken with diligence and commitment. From her tenure at USAFI to her work at Sears West Towne and Humana Health Insurance, she approached each responsibility with professionalism, leaving a lasting impression on those around her.

Barbara's greatest joys, however, were found with her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Otto, whose unwavering presence was a source of strength and joy throughout their 68-year journey together. Barbara's legacy extends through her children: Julie (Ross) Cowing, Jeff Puls, and Joanne (David) Powers. Her grandchildren, Sarah (Sean) and Brian Cowing, Jordan (Kyle) DeRudder, Nicole (Mike) Powers, and Kaitlin Christensen; a great-grandson (with two more on the way); a niece and many nephews held a special place in her heart. Not to be overlooked, are her beloved granddogs, who brought her immense joy. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Brooks; brother-in-law, Richard Brooks; and sister-in-law, Betty Massey.

Barbara's zest for life was brimming with vitality and passion from beginning to end. She was an avid UW Basketball fan and delighted in attending countless Badger games. Her love for card clubs, daily walks, reading, gambling, movies, and sewing brought her immense pleasure. She enjoyed visiting grandchildren in other parts of the country; frequently commenting "that was the best ever" about their adventures, sporting and arts events. She found greatest joy in the company of her family and friends. Barbara had a remarkable ability to connect with others. Her energy was infectious, lighting up every room she entered.

Barbara's home was full of love and warmth, where special moments were crafted with care and holidays became lavish celebrations and snacks were always available. She was a mother who nurtured her family with boundless love and created joy amidst life's busyness.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Garding Against Cancer in Barbara's memory, a cause close to her heart.

Barbara's passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and joy that will continue to inspire and uplift us all. Rest in peace, dear Barbara, knowing that your light will shine on forever in our hearts.

Sending my thoughts and love to all of Barb’s family. We considered her our 3rd grandmother and we loved her like so. She was such a joy to be around and I will always admire her positivity and pure happiness she brought to those around her. I have so many wonderful memories of Barb and will cherish them always. This photo is from last year when we took her to a winery to celebrate her birthday which we planned to do again this year and we still plan to do in honor of her. My family often talks about how we “wish we could be more like Barb” -her outlook on life was contagious and I will always remember her with a smile on her face. Love - Mairin Ryan

I have known Barb for 68 years and have been blessed to spend time with Otto and her in so many different ways. Helped them move into their home on Maple while playing together on a baseball team. She was always there to support her Otto. As an officials' wife she took my wife under her wing to teach her the tricks. Hall of Fame Club volunteer, Badger Booster and so many more allowed me to see her and appreciate all she did for so many. The one thing that I remember most is that every time I saw her I smiled! she was a joy and will always be remembered the loving soul she was and still is. Bless you Barb and thanks for being you. Rest well you deserve it.

In the encyclopedia, under "Amazing Ladies of Wisconsin" AND under "Most Impressive Life Stories" (a/k/a obit), there is listed the name "Barbara (Holmes) Puls". My family had a double dose of Barbara for almost 60 years, first as Otto's cheerleader and, then, as a nearby Middleton neighbor! She helped make my Family a happier Family, just by being near and dear. The sadness of her departure is enormous . . . RIP, Barb, and thanks for helping to make Middleton and Wisconsin a better place!! Sincere condolences to Otto and the rest of the Puls Family, from all of mine. Dan Simms

In loving memory of Barb, Barb's radiant joy of life was a beacon to all who crossed her path. While her family was her greatest source of happiness, her warmth and genuine interest in everyone and in every encounter - a cherished moment. Never a moment when out for walks that both sides did not genuinely want to stop to come together to catch up and connect again. She had a remarkable knack for making everyone feel seen and valued, always eager to hear about the lives of those around her. Her spirit of kindness and camaraderie will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Mark Sara Hanson & Family
