Obituary

CAMBRIDGE - Carol Ann St. Aubin was born on July 7, 1964, at Marquette Hospital to Guinevere "Gwen" and John Robert St. Aubin. She spent her childhood in Gwinn, Mich., attending Gwinn High School and serving on the Yearbook Club as well as the student body president for three of her four years in high school. Carol was an avid photographer from an early age, and was offered a full scholarship to pursue photography at Marquette University.

Following her high school years she moved to Cambridge, Wis., to start a family. In May of 1989, her first child, Al, was born, followed soon after by her second child, Brenna, in December of 1991. Her twins, Samantha and Mackenzie, arrived in July of 1997. Carol described her children as "her everything," and was immensely proud of all four. For them, she remained a loving, supportive presence all the days of her life.

Carol loved traveling and in 2000 she was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend an extended period of time living in England with her family, with mainland Europe only a short ferry ride away. She spent that time photographing and documenting her family's travels around Europe in a series of voluminous scrapbooks, which remain among her children’s most prized bequests. Scrapbooking was another of Carol's favorite activities, and she spent many hours with her children and close friends documenting their personal histories. Carol even went on to own a scrapbooking store, Rock, Paper, Scissors LLC in Cambridge for a number of years. Carol also worked with the Cambridge Arts Council in her last few years of life, contributing to such high-profile events as the Annual Art Gala. She had a lifelong passion for arts and crafts, and passed that love on to her children.

The only thing Carol enjoyed more than being a mom (and a dog mom) was being a grandma. One of her proudest moments was the birth of her granddaughter, Sophie, in 2017. She spent many hours playing, cuddling, and watching Frozen with Sophie and her terrier mix, Sadie.

In 2016, Carol was diagnosed with Stage I lung cancer. She underwent treatment under the expert care of the Carbone Cancer Center in Madison and went into remission. In 2019 she was rediagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer and retired from her position as IRB Compliance Officer at UW Whitewater. Carol fought like hell following her second diagnosis, and passed peacefully on the morning of May 5, 2024, at the age of 59.

Carol was preceded in death by her brother, Larry; her father, John Robert; her mother, Gwen; and her granddaughter, Sophie. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Al (John), Brenna, Sam, and Kenzie (Nathan); her siblings, Bobby (Nan), Marla (Jerry), and Alan (Peggy); and her lifelong friends, Stacie, Kate, Theresa, Nora, and Laurie.

Carol's children would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Grace Blitzer and her radiology team, as well as Dr. Michael Eastman and his oncology team for their dedication, compassion, and care during her prolonged illness. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in Carol's name.

My heart of broken!! I am so sorry to hear of Carol's death and also the loss of Sophia. I love my nieces, and I am sending you love and hugs. The last time I was with Carol, we sang Karaoke together. we both had a love of wine and crafts. I know how much she loved Sophie, I hope she is comforting her, but it's probably more the other way around.

I think the reason Carol was class president three out of four years is she was the nicest person in the class!!! She always had a nice word for you no matter where you were on the social ladder. She will be missed!! Signed, a Gwinn High constituent.
