Obituary

MADISON - Jack Edward DeYoung, 84, of Madison, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Jack was born in Oostburg, WI, and attended Oostburg High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. He went on to attend UW-Madison and often hitchhiked back home to see Shirley, who was still living in Hingham.  He graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in accounting and became a CPA.  Jack worked for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for most of his career. After retiring from the Department of Revenue, he continued to work as a sales tax consultant, and was still working this year.

Jack was active in his church, first at Crossroads CRC and later at Door Creek Church.  He served at the church in various ways and enjoyed participating in Bible study groups at Door Creek. He and his family helped serve at Luke House, which provides meals for those in need in Madison.

Jack and Shirley were married for 62 years. Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Pam (Jon) Cherney and Lisa (Todd) Jekel; sister, Virginia Van Stelle; six grandchildren, Ben (Sharon) Cherney, Katherine (Dave Coulthurst) Cherney, Lauren (Will Shirey) Cherney, Sam Jekel, Jo (Logan) Samuelson and Wes Jekel; and four great-grandchildren, Jack, Nora, Micah and Finley.  Jack and Shirley also cared for over 70 foster children during their lifetime, including Paul Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Cora; sister, Joyce Nyenhuis; and brothers-in-law John (Bill) Nyenhuis and Richard Van Stelle.

Jack loved spending time with his family, both in Madison and up north. He enjoyed sports and being outside. He loved camping, biking, racquetball, golfing and was a fast-pitch softball pitcher until the age of 69. He enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren as they played high school and college sports.  He was a Badgers fan - he and Shirley had season tickets for basketball and football for years and enjoyed watching them on tv.

A celebration of life service will be held at DOOR CREEK CHURCH, 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. A luncheon will follow. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. Jack wouldn’t want suits and ties at his service, so you’re welcome to wear your Badgers gear or a favorite golf shirt.

Memorials may be made in Jack’s name to Luke House or Door Creek Church.

My condolences to Shirley and all of Jack's family. I was unable to attend the services for Jack, but I would be remiss if I didn't express my admiration for Jack DeYoung and my appreciation for his being the impetus for my successful career with the Department of Revenue. It was at Jack's request that I applied for an Administration Technical Services position in 1988, and Jack, thanks for your assistance in advancing my career, both before and subsequent to that time. I don't think I ever properly thanked him for that, and now I regret that. Godspeed, my friend, and R.I.P! Mark Wipperfurth

RIP Jack. You were a formidable pitcher and our games were always tight. Through it all you were always the gentleman on the field and after the game. It was a pleasure to call you a friend. Ricky M
