Obituary

COTTAGE GROVE - Gene James Arndt, age 58, of Cottage Grove, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 18, 2024, as a result of years of diabetes and heart complications. He was born on Aug. 27, 1965, in Madison, Wis., the son of Leslie and MaryAnn (Suchomel) Arndt.


Gene was a graduate of Monona Grove High School class of 1983, and received his Associates Degree from MATC. He was a Deerfield / Cottage Grove Resident his entire life and was well known in the community.  He worked as a service writer for Don Miller, Zimbrick and Jon Lancaster auto dealerships, and for many years he worked for Nelson Wreath Ranch prior to the holiday season. He was proud of having a manicured yard, and always took great pride in the automobiles he drove and owned. In his free time he loved snowmobiling, playing cards and being with friends. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Cottage Grove Snowmobile Club.


Gene is survived by his brothers, Kenneth (Jeanne) Arndt, Ronald (Connie) Arndt and David (Vicki) Arndt; sisters, Sharon (Delferd) Jasper, Sandra (Robert) Nelson, Bette (Jeffrey) Paulson, Julie (Allen) Anderson; sister-in-law, Lori Arndt; and his beloved dog, Blanch. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Arndt; niece, Chelsea Arndt; niece and God-daughter, Nikki Arndt-Jones; nephews, Steven Anderson and Chris Augustin; and great-nephew, Casey Jasper.


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Friday April 26, 2024, with Pastor Dan O’Brien presiding. A celebration of life with light refreshments will follow the memorial service until 4 p.m. on Friday.  


Special Thanks to Daryl, Paula and Molly Fedkenhaur and the many friends and neighbors who helped support Gene.  The family also wishes to thank Meriter Hospital and the staff that made Gene's wish to see and visit with his special canine, Blanch, during his final days in the hospital.


In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to help with Gene's final expenses.

Gene and Ken and folks had a joining property to my folks The lived east of us and went monona school district and we lived west. Both families had their choice to which what school they wanted their kids to go to! Great family friends!. I will always remember!!!!❤❤❤❤

I went to the USA in 1982 as an AFS student to do my senior year in Monona Grove High School. Came from Paraguay, a country in south America nobody knew anything about. Then Geno comes around, he showed me the place and out of the blue we became buddies. We had a lot of fun and many stories to tell. Like the time we were doing doughnuts in the frozen parking lot of the mall and the police came and gently asked us to stop doing stupid things or the countless times we went for Little Caesar`s pizza an beer (He was the beer guy, I was more a Jack Daniels kind of guy). I´ve kept in touch with him all these years. Technology cached up and lately we did videocalls, it was great. The last days we were talking about life and death. I told him one answer i like and it came from an interview to a famous actor, Keanu Reeves. The interviewer asked him, What happens when you die? and his answer was.. People that loved you will miss you. That is me my dear friend.

I am so sad to read of Gene's passing in the newspaper. He was our service advisor for a number of years at Jon Lancaster. He was always so nice and dependable. Always a pleasure to work with.
