George was born in Mount Vernon, NY on June 6, 1931. He was the son of George Alfred Waller Sr. and Alma Ammann. George married Margaret Eleanor McLaughlin on September 6, 1954, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton, ND. They were married for 67 years before Margaret’s passing in October of 2021.
George is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, George (Judith), Mark (Katherine), Michael (JoLayne), Greg (Bobbi), Tom (Angelique), Jeremy (Libby), and John (Rachael); as well as daughters and sons-in-law, Nadine Rood (Michael) and Paulette Rodriquez (Jose); 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. (1972) and Alma (1985); and his beloved sisters, Alma and Paula.
After serving as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, George attended Carroll College in Helena, MT where he received his teaching degree. He subsequently taught high school English in Roundup and Glendive, MT before taking a position as an English instructor at Grand Forks, ND Red River High School and then as a Guidance Counsellor at Grand Forks Central High School. He served the Grand Forks Area School District for 23 years before retiring in 1991. He is fondly remembered by countless students whose lives were enhanced by his teaching and counselling.
George enjoyed fishing and golf and spent much of his retirement on the golf course and at his favorite fishing spots. He loved reading and long thoughtful conversations with his sons and daughters and his many friends and coworkers. He was beloved by his children and grandchildren for his funny stories and innumerable “Pappyisms.”
In keeping with his wishes, George will be laid to rest next to his wife, Margaret, in a quiet and private “green” burial graveside service at the Farley Center’s Natural Path Sanctuary, 2299 Spring Rose Road, Verona, WI.
