Obituary

FITCHBURG - Herbert Allan “Al” Stanford, age 72, passed away peacefully at home in Fitchburg, Wis., on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Al was born on Aug. 27, 1951, in Madison, Wis., to Herbert and Celia (Williams) Stanford.


He married the love of his life, Sharen, on April 2, 1976. Together they raised three great boys.


Al served in the U.S. Air Force and National Guard for 23 years. After his service, Al worked for the University of Wisconsin for 28 years before retiring in 2008. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and softball over the years, and a nice cold PBR.


Al is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Kim) Anderson, Robert Stanford, and Russell (Angela) Stanford; his seven grandchildren; and other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife; and his parents.


A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at Highland Memory Gardens, 3054 County Highway BB, Cottage Grove. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2024, and again on Friday morning from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

My favorite memory was when we were about 8yrs old we had dances in our steak house quite often and Allen was the main boy for all of us girls. I can say we all learned to dance at that time. He is going to be so missed. ❤️❤️❤️

Al was like a big brother to me, I remember our fishing and hunting trips it seemed like every weekend, spending time on the square or working on his race car! He was a true friend and will be missed by everyone he touched! I would imagine him and Sharen are planning their Anniversary right now! Sending hugs and prayers to all your family!🙏🙏🙏🙏
