Obituary

MADISON - Richard Doll, age 91, of Monona, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at St. Mary's Hospital, where his life journey also began. He was born on Sept. 19, 1932, in Madison, Wis., the son of Vincent and Sarah (Moran) Doll.

Richard’s father owned Doll Grocery Store on South Park Street, where Richard worked delivering groceries when he was young man. He attended Edgewood High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1957 with a degree in Engineering. Richard met his future wife, Inger Hovland, during her stay in the United States. She was employed as a secretary, immersing herself in learning the English language. They were introduced to each other while visiting mutual friends. After the visit, he escorted her home and they found something special. They were married in her hometown of Oslo, Norway in 1958.

Richard embarked on a distinguished career as an Engineer for the State of Wisconsin, culminating in his retirement in 1997. His professional journey also intersected with a tenure in the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of Major before retiring. While on active duty, he was stationed in Japan, during the Vietnam War.

Richard's passion for sports spanned his entire lifetime. He actively participated in various sports such as softball, basketball, bowling, and held a strong affinity for tennis. For many years, Richard served as a WIAA official for high school football, basketball, and volleyball throughout southern Wisconsin. Richard dedicated himself to coaching all three of his sons' Little League baseball teams. Additionally, he made it a priority to attend every one of his children and grandchildren’s events, showing unwavering support and encouragement.

Beyond athletics, he possessed a keen interest in card games, excelling notably in Bridge. One of his cherished traditions included engaging in spirited games of cribbage with his family during the summer outings at the lake.

Richard is survived by his wife, Inger; his sons, Dennis (Nancy) Doll, Peter (Carol) Doll and Paul (Lesley) Doll; four grandsons, Lars Doll (Jennifer), Alec Doll (Kelly), Erik Doll and Kyle Doll; and granddaughter, Hanna Doll. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geraldine Symons; and infant brother, Vincent Doll.

We'll miss our USTA Tennis Captain; he'll probably be organizing teams now from above. It was great knowing and playing with and against him for many years.
