Obituary

MADISON - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lois A. Kiggens, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated community member, on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the age of 87. Lois departed peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, intellectual curiosity, and community service.

Born in Portage, Wis., on April 12, 1936, to Harold and Maurine (Burton) Williams, Lois grew into a spirited and compassionate individual. Her journey into lifelong learning and service began in her hometown, volunteering as a Girl Scout at the Zona Gale Library. This experience sparked a passion that would define much of her life and career.

After graduating from Portage High School in 1954, Lois married, and welcomed three children into the world: Jim, Kathy, and Cindy. The family's love and shared moments of joy are treasures that will always be held close to their hearts.

Lois' professional life was marked by her dedication to libraries, starting in her youth and spanning several institutions including the Madison Public, New Haven Public, Sun Prairie Public, and MATC Libraries. Her commitment to literature and education was paralleled only by her active involvement in her community. A passionate Eastside Community member, Lois was proud to say she was a Democrat since 6th grade, contributing her energy and insights to the Union Local No. 3872's founding documents, the Board of Directors for Dane County Planned Parenthood, the Atwood Community Center, and supporting Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

Beyond her professional and community endeavors, Lois had a vibrant personal life. She was a connoisseur of literature, art, music, and a world traveler with a keen interest in world history, politics, and impressionism. Her travels took her from the historic landscapes of Europe and Russia to the ancient wonders of Egypt. An accomplished Grand Champion Bridge player, Lois' competitive spirit saw her travel widely across the United States to participate in tournaments. She also found joy in swimming, tennis, and golf, and in watching the Milwaukee Brewers, sharing these passions with friends and family.

Lois deeply valued education and the arts, a legacy evident in her pride for her family’s achievements and her faithful attendance at her grandchildren’s performances, art shows, and sporting events. She is lovingly remembered by her family: her three children, James (Deborah) Kiggens, Kathleen Bultman, and Cynthia McCallum; grandchildren, Laura (Scott) MacDonald, Shaun (Charissa) Kiggens, Karra (Jose Cazares) Ashton, Lisa (Brad Poling) Bultman, Christopher (Amanda Kim) McCallum, Bryan Kiggens, Cameron (Alyssa Beck) McCallum, Roland Hilbert; and great-grandchild, Mateo Cazares. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Linda McCormick.

Lois is also remembered by her former husband, Robert Kiggens; her sister-in-law, Rosemary McTier and family; many nieces and nephews and special friends and travel companions, Susan Puntillo and Jim McGonigle.

Lois' life was a testament to the power of community, the pursuit of knowledge, and the importance of family. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her and benefited from her generous spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to PBS Wisconsin, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, or to Senator Tammy Baldwin’s campaign. And, as she would have wanted, please make sure to register to vote and use your voice for the good of our community.

A celebration of Lois Kiggens’ life will be held at OLBRICH BOTANICAL GARDENS, in the Atrium, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison, from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Friends and family are welcome to come and honor her memory. Lois’ light, wisdom, and love for life will be dearly missed, but her impact will be felt for generations to come.
