Obituary

MONONA - Norman Frank Herro, age 87, of Monona, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Heritage Assisted Living Monona. He was born on Oct. 16, 1936, in Milwaukee, the son of Phil and Fran (Zagar) Herro and was the beloved younger brother of Bert.

Norm married the love of his life, Barbara (Quamme), on April 23, 1960, and together they had four children, Mike (Cheri) Herro, Steve (Sandi Mehre) Herro, Bruce Herro and Julie (Jim) Roloff. They were blessed with eight grandchildren, Katie (Josh) Wiegel, Sam (Kat), Lucas and Matthew Herro, Andrea (fiancé, Jon Howe) and Thomas Herro, Peter and Ben Roloff; and six great- grandchildren, Barrett, Callen and Lenni Wiegel and Eleanor, Louise and Ingrid Herro.

Norm was a 1955 graduate of Madison East High School and was in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He started his banking career at First National Bank where he met Barb.  He later spent the majority of his career at Anchor Bank in various roles. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Barb, being a Zamboni driver, pizza demo guy and an actor in commercials.

Norm loved life and people, but his greatest love was his family. He enjoyed the annual family trips up north to Lake Sissabagama, fishing, being the “Mayor” of Glenview Drive and time spent with his lifelong friends and spouses, aka Card Club.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

Memorials may be gifted in Norm’s name to Aldo Leopold Nature Center and Newbridge Madison, formerly East Madison/Monona Coalition of the Aging.

Thank you to the staff at Heritage Assisted Living, Agrace HospiceCare and his special helper, Jessie, for their compassionate care.

Norm was loved by many and will be missed by all.  He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, the Mazzara’s who were like family, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

We love you and will miss you.

To Barb and the Herro Family, I worked with Norm at AnchorBank in a couple different loan departments. He was a character…in a good way! He made work fun and taught me to enjoy life. I have several fun, funny, and fond memories of times spent with him. Beyond being a character, he was a great friend! My sincere condolences to you all. Torey Schauff

Our condolences to the Herro family. I was fortunate to work with Norm in the early 1990s at AnchorBank downtown. He brought so much experience and fun to every day, and was such a great guy. Thank you Norm, Molly and Mark Breyer
