Obituary

MADISON - Julianne C. "Judy" Setzkorn, known for her love and adventurous spirit, peacefully departed while surrounded by family, on Feb. 14, 2024, in Madison, WI, at the age of 87.

Born on May 30, 1936, in Danville, IL, Judy was the daughter of George T. and Ella (Searing) Crowell.  Judy's educational journey began at Oconomowoc High School, where she graduated with honors. This laid the groundwork for her future as she continued her quest for excellence at UW Madison, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957.  Judy excelled as a Medical Technologist specializing in Pediatric Oncology at UW Hospital. Judy's professional tenure was defined by her desire to make a difference and her commitment to enhancing the lives of those under her care.

In 1958, Judy exchanged vows with her beloved, Donald R. Setzkorn. Together, they shared cherished moments until Don's premature passing. Don and Judy will continue to live on through their three living children, Julie, Charlie and Marci.

Judy led a life of many passions, each pursued with resilience and dedication; from surviving a tornado when she was a child - a testament to her inner strength-to becoming an avid water skier and Quarter Horse jockey, Judy always embraced every endeavor.

Her hobbies extended beyond the ordinary; she raised Champion Great Danes and fearlessly took to the skies as a pilot in her 40s. You could find her on the greens of a golf course, casting a line for fly fishing, or traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Judy's love for nature was evident in every pursuit.

Age never hindered Judy's zest for life. At 76, she embarked on a horse pack trip through the mountains of Wyoming. She gracefully retired from horseback riding at the youthful age of 80. Her strong bonds with her rescued dog, Dave, and her beloved horse, Bachelor, reflected her caring and compassionate nature.

Judy cherished her family deeply, fostering a strong bond that is truly special. The yearly family vacation she organized will bring generations together for years to come. Her love and enthusiasm for life will always shine through her family.

Judy's legacy is carried on by her children, Julie Setzkorn Brown, Charles R. (Linda) Setzkorn and Marci (Josh) Miller; her six grandchildren, Kimberly (Kyle) Smith, Nicole Brown, Taryn (fiancé, Ryan Sacco) Rast, Kylee Rast, Brandie (Cesar) Diosdado and Matthew Fillnow; her four great-grandchildren, Liam and Vera Smith, Dane Sacco and Cruz Miller; and her sister-in-law, Bobbie Crowell.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her brother, George T. Crowell, Jr.; and her son-in-law, Jeff Brown.

Judy will be remembered as a loving, adventurous, and passionate soul. Her story is one of inspiration, a reminder to all to live fully and love deeply.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, May 4, 2024.  Memorials may be made to ASPCA. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Loved Judy to pieces! When she came to Arizona to visit Marci and her family it was always great to see her and spend some time with her. As I told Julie the other day, I will always remember Judy's voice saying "Oh Marci!!" in the way only Judy could do. My heart goes out to all of you who love her but really, how lucky you are to have had her in your life. Love to you all, Tracy

Judy, Judy, Judy!, apparently Cary Grant did not actually say this. Met Judy at my gym, CORE. I was somewhat intimidated by her (not just because she was my trainer’s Grandma, but I think I sensed something along the lines of “this is a rare bird”. And dang if I wasn’t right. A group of us would reward ourselves after our workouts going for coffee. The Mensa (😆) Riffraff Cwoffee Klatch. Seemed more often than not, another layer of Judy’s life would be unpeeled. I went to art sk00l, so I’d have to add a chapter to Judy’s graphic novel. I’d get to draw planes, dogs, horses, ummm yeah, FAMILY too! 😆 My way of showing affection is pulling pigtails & dipping them in the ink well. (Yes, I am cobweb old. Get over it.) So Judy, with all her accomplishments…was fair game. Plus, I knew she could take anything I served out, laugh, and promptly put me in my place. What’s not to ❤️? Summing up, as if one can for such a well lived life, Judy gave me one of the best BD gifts EVER. I will bring it with me at her memorial. It made me, & still makes me just crack-up. Couldn’t ❤️ & cherish it more. To you, my dear! 🥃

Judy was also an excellent cook and seamstress. She often appeared at my doorstop with huge platters of her handmade cream puffs to enhance a family gathering I may have been hosting. I most fondly recall an afternoon we spent together sewing a prom dress for her Granddaughter Kim. We conversed by grumbling over the intricacies of the pattern and the unwieldiness of the fabric. I cannot forget our daily early morning side by side chats as we walked our treadmills and frequently were followed by a hearty breakfast at what was once called Monte’s. I will miss my energetic, cheerful , optimistic friend! Carol Kleinfeldt
