Obituary

MADISON - Norman Paul Moore, age 62, of Madison, passed away on Feb. 2, 2024, doing what he loved most: biking.

Norman was a man of many names, passions, and adventures; but most importantly, he was a man of service. Norman found his purpose in life by volunteering and serving those in need.

"Stormin' Norman" proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, from 1981 to 2001, and retired honorably as a Master Sergeant.

"Norman the Choreman" served his community and the greater Madison area by helping others with household projects while making lifelong connections along the way.

"Norman the Nomad'' brought joy to anyone lucky enough to cross his (bike) path as he explored some of his favorite National Parks, such as Big Bend in Texas. His adventures can be viewed in perpetuity at www.youtube.com/@normanthenomad22

When he wasn't traveling the country in his van, his service did not stop. He spent his time between travels peddling bikes for his favorite bike shop, Motorless Motion.

His greatest acts of service were to his family, friends, and loved ones. Anyone who knew Norman understood that he loved, and was proud of, his three boys. Through his actions and words, he promoted kindness, love, and allowing yourself some grace. It is fitting that one of his favorite sayings was "Love more, judge less. Even when it comes to yourself."

Norman is survived by his mother, Margaret; sisters, Natasha (Joel) and Gloria (Tamra); brother, Leon (Gini); three boys, Jason, Joshua (Melba) and Nathaniel (Nassim); mother of his three boys, Barbara; grandsons, Matthew and Joaquin; all of his extremely close extended family; and all of his biking family. He was preceded in death by his father, James.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. Military honors will follow. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Friends and family who wish to view the service via LIVE STREAM may do so by visiting Norman’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com and clicking on the Watch Webcast link at the time of the service.

I remember the first time I met Norm. It was 2011 or 2012. He had joined the Kettle Moraine bike ride put on by The Wisconsin Bicycle meet up group. He came with his gal at the time, and rode a single geared bike. Here we were all riding various road bikes & wearing the newest biking clothes. Not Norm! He rode single gear older bike and wore kakis! LOLOL At first, I was worried if he would make the full ride. I should not have worried at all! He was born to ride! He definitely proved that it did not matter what you rode, it was the ride itself. I will always remember the joy that shown on his face that first time I rode with him & every ride after that! My condolences go out to Norm's family, and loved ones. Know that Norm will be very much missed by many, however he will live on forever in our memories & hearts. Debbie

You know how there are those people that are just part of your community. Not family or a close friend, but someone you say hi to when you run into each other, and if there is time, you check-in? People who make you feel connected to a place. Norm was that for me. I met him through the Wisconsin Bike Touring meetup group when I moved here. He was one of the first people that welcomed me to this new city 7 years ago. Since then, he never forgot me, and vice versa. If I was on a ride, or at Motorless Motion, or who knows where and we recognized one another, there was always a smile and a hello, if not a sharing of stories and adventures or a remembering of our shared birthday. He made me feel a part of Madison as a whole, not invisibly going about my days, especially in those first few years as I made friends. The most recent time this happened was a week and a half ago at Lazy Jane's. I was deep in conversation with friends when he got the table next to us and said hi. I wish at the time I had taken a break to catch up with him. I didn't realize it would be our last smile and hello. For me, this spoke to the side of Norm I knew, welcoming, a leader, and an avid cyclist. Someone who made this city the community it is for me today. I am so so sorry for your loss. I know I miss my birthday buddy. The gift he gave me lives on in the way I try to be like Norm to others in Madison. Olivia
