Obituary

LODI - An inspiration to many was called to his eternal home and forever cured of cancer on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at his home, surrounded by those that loved him, after a 6+ year battle with medulloblastoma. Carson Martin Schmudlach was born Jan. 21, 2004, to William and Norma Jean (Johns) Schmudlach. He was the sibling his brother, Bryor, had been wanting for years.

Carson faced life with the determination, perseverance, dignity, and resiliency of a true hero. In his short 20 years of life, he faced several challenges. He would meet each challenge showing us all that everything you want can be achieved if you set your mind to it.

Carson was a Lodi High School Class of 2023 graduate and was currently attending the 18-21 Transition Classes twice a week when his health allowed him to. He took pride in being the best student he could be. Seeing his classmates and teachers is what drove him to continue participating virtually in a couple of classes in 2021, after finding out his cancer was growing and after being admitted to hospice. Joining his friends virtually for English and Unified PE classes and participating in an Independent Art class brought joy to his life. His artistic and creative abilities were nothing short of amazing and his life goal was to become an animator. To work towards that goal, he was awarded his Make a Wish in 2021. He loved creating works of art on his Picasso and 3D printer. In addition to school, Carson was a Special Olympics athlete, winning numerous awards in bowling and basketball skills. After much persistence he even had the chance to show animals at the Lodi Agricultural Fair for four years. After trying it the first time, he was hooked and did an amazing job of showing pigs two years and a calf at the 2021 and 2022 Lodi Agricultural Fair.

Carson is survived by his parents and his brother, Bryor (Heather Powell). He is further survived by his grandmothers, Ruby Schmudlach and Avon Neupert, along with aunts and uncles, Don and Cheryl Schmudlach, Stacy Johns (Liana Lewis), Tina Neupert, Blaine and Peggy Neupert and Aleta and Brian Amick. He enjoyed the times he was able to spend with his cousins, Amber (Jarrett) Zweig, Jasmine (Jerry) Sliger, Zelda (Lucio Gonzales) and Julliette Johns, Amanda and Brandon (Nicole) Neupert, and Cassandra and Dominic Amick. The love he had for his "brother from another mother," AJ Hernandez, was unbelievable. In addition to many other friends and family he is survived by his cookie loving friends, John, Julie, Randy and Diane and very special friend, Pat Derer.

Carson was welcomed to his eternal home by his grandfathers, Donald Schmudlach and Jerold Neupert; uncle, Scott; cousin, Valerie Schmudlach; and great-grandmother, Laura Johns.

A celebration of life will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Carson's family feels blessed that God allowed us more time together to create lasting memories. We would also like to thank the staff of the Lodi School District and American Family Childrens' Hospital. You all went above and beyond during his hospitalizations, treatments, clinical visits and the days that followed. Words cannot express our sincere gratitude to the medical teams of Dr. Stadler, Dr. Puccetti and Dr. Bradley for all your compassion and understanding. The family would also like to thank the Badger Childhood Cancer Network for their support during Carson's cancer treatments and for honoring Carson as a superhero for the SuperHero Run/Walk in 2019. A special appreciation to nurse Sierra, social worker Melanie and the team from Agrace HospiceCare that helped ensure Carson was comfortable during his final days. You are all beyond amazing!

Carson, thank you for showing us all what true strength and unconditional love looks like. "l know one thing…" we will miss you like crazy Teeter, and we look forward to the day when we can all be together again in the place that God has prepared for us. Carson will be missed beyond words, but we trust in God's plan, purpose, and promise of eternal life.

Let me win,

But if I cannot win,

Let me be brave in the attempt.

Norma Jean, Avon, Stacey and family, I am so sorry and I send my most heartfelt thoughts as you celebrate the life of Carson. I only got to meet him once, but it was very obvious he looked ahead with determination. I am unable to attend the services, but wanted you all to know I will be there in thoughts and together in prayer. Carson was one very fortunate guy to have you all as his most dedicated and loving loved ones. His determination was fueled by you all and a true reflection of the strong hearted people that you are. Norma Jean, your Mom has given you the strength and example of what it takes to be such a wonderful mother and indeed Carson’s accomplishments and enjoyment of life are a true reflection of you and your husband’s guidance and love you shed unto him to give him the power he needed to accomplish so much. Please rest. I have sent a card in the mail, but wanted you to hear from me. Please share with your Mom for me. Hugs to all. Becky Gray Wornson
