Obituary
MADISON - Vang C. Thao, aged 73, gracefully passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, at 2:40 p.m. at UW Hospital and Clinics. Born on June 3, 1950, in Thom Soi, Xieng Khouang, Laos, his extraordinary journey touched lives far and wide.
During the Secret War of the Vietnam Era, Vang served courageously between 1965 to 1975 for the United States. He held the position of Chief of Staff Section 4 (C-4) on the 204th Battalion, GM-22, Secondary Military Region, where he played a crucial role in distributing food and supplies in aircraft such as the Air America Pilatus PC-6 Porter and Hueys. His involvement was integral to the success of the United States Secret Army Special Guerrilla Unit (USSA/SGU) under the CIA. From 1975 to 1978, Vang continued to be active in Hmong resistance groups, continuing his commitment to and advocacy for freedom and democracy in Laos.
In July of 1978, Vang, along with his wife and two daughters, escaped from Laos by foot, across the Mekong River, and into Nong Khai Refugee Camp in Thailand. However, his noble efforts did not cease. He continued to return to Laos to rescue and guide hundreds of friends and family members from Laos to refugee camps in Thailand. Vang was the first member of his immediate and extended family to immigrate to the United States. In December of 1979, his family of four arrived in Wisconsin. After arriving, he continued to pave the way for the rest of his immediate and extended family to immigrate to the United States.
Vang's strong work ethic led him to pursue employment in various industries, with him finally retiring in 1999 from Kraft Foods in Madison due to health issues. During his retirement, Vang achieved the rank of Lieutenant General (LTG) and served as Commanding General of the non-profit organization United States Army Defense Corps (USADC), Wisconsin Chapter. Most recently, Vang developed a passion for floristry, showcasing his designs at the Beloit Farmers Market. Vang also dedicated himself to managing community gardens, contributing to the vibrant beauty of the surroundings. He tirelessly supported the Hmong community as a clan leader and counselor, and served as a well-known Hmong funeral service specialist.
Vang is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Kayoua Thao Pearl (Roy Pearl), Kia Thao (Toua Xiong), Pa Foua Thao (Tony Pha), Bao Thao Ra-El (David Ra-El), and Pa Dhao Thao; sons and daughters-in-law, Jia Neng Thao (Pa Ku Yang), Fue Thao (Marly Lee), and Kee Zeng Thao (Sue Lee), 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his sister, Mee Thao, and five brothers, Nao Toua Thao, Nhia Chong Thao, Zong Yia Thao, Fuechou Thao, and Chue Feing Thao. His current partner, Pai Lee Thao, and her five children, Seng Thao, Chue Thao, Yia Thao, Sue Thao and Kou Thao, continue to cherish his memory along with his children, relatives and friends. Vang was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Chor Her Thao; parents, Chong Neng Thao and Xao Vang; and brother, Ka Pao Thao.
Vang's enduring legacy resides in the hearts of those he influenced, forever celebrated for his compassion, bravery, and the harmonious notes from his musical talents that enriched our lives. His profound contributions extended beyond, leaving an indelible mark on his family, friends, and the Hmong community, where his dedicated service and support will be remembered with gratitude.
