Obituary

MADISON - On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, we bid farewell to David Dahl, who passed away unexpectedly in Madison, Wis.

Born in De Soto, Wis., on Sept. 10, 1943, David graduated from Viroqua High School in 1961. His journey led him to discover his passion for animals at the Henry Vilas Zoo, where he dedicated over 40 years of his career. In 1967, David married Mildred Rowe, and together they raised two children.

David's diverse interests ranged from quality family time to hunting with friends and family on his property. A true jack of all trades, he enjoyed building, fixing things, and shared his expertise generously. He was an avid member of the Yahara Fishing Club and a dedicated volunteer for Fishing Has No Boundaries.

David's legacy lives on through his wife of 57 years of marriage, Mildred; daughter, Barb Breneman; son, Mark (Tonya) Dahl; and cherished grandchildren, Katie, Caitlyn, Alex and Brooklyn.

A funeral service will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 734 Holy Cross Way, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, with the Rev Mark Bartels presiding. A luncheon will follow at the church. A graveside service will take place at HIGHLAND MEMORY GARDENS, 3054 Highway BB, Cottage Grove, at 2 p.m. on Friday. I have always enjoyed Dave's company. He was such a positive, fun guy. We met through the Yahara Fishing Club. Dave, Tom Klein and I fished together on Tom's boat. We were fishing the Wisconsin River below the Sauk dam and things were not going well for me. I sat on a rod and broke it, followed by getting a hook in my hand. I turned to Tom and Dave and asked whether they had something to take the hook out. Dave laughed and reached for an old pair of rusty plyers and said he was ready. The hook was removed but not by Dave. I will miss Dave and am very grateful he was my friend. Rich Connor

Millie and family I am sorry to hear about Dave’s passing . I have many good memories of fishing with Dave, both locally on the ice and at Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee. I am in Arizona right now so won’t be able to attend the service. Take care Stan Nichols
