Obituary

MADISON - Richard J. Riddle, age 82, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at Oak Park Place Autumn Lane. He was born on June 15, 1941, in Madison, the son of Lloyd Riddle and Catherine Moran.


Richard graduated from Madison East High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Matush, on June 30, 1962, in Madison. He worked in the banking industry for his entire career.


Richard was active in sports, especially golf, softball, basketball and bowling. He was an official for high school football and basketball and coached youth softball and baseball. He ran several Syttende Mai races as well as Crazy Legs, his biggest race was the Milwaukee Marathon. Richard took pleasure in constructing and piloting RC airplanes. He owned corvettes and even worked on them as one of his hobbies.


Richard is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Scott (Marcia) Riddle; daughter, Pam (John Hulbert) Riddle; three granddaughters, Anne Perry, Jessica (Brandon) Carnahan and Andrea Hulbert; grandson, Nate Hulbert; and great-grandson, Jackson Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Patricia (Pete) Colvin and Mary Lou Yablonski.


A memorial service will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
 

Richard got the greatest pleasure in making others happy, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Goodman’s Center as well as Agrace HospiceCare.

Oh! Uncle Dick! The Amazing Memories we have as a family!!! Many holidays spent together, how Blessed we were to have all that time together. We all will always remember the summer playing slow pitch softball together, what a special time!! Thanks for all the great laughs, conversations and caring words!! Until we meet again Big Bopper!! I will be sure to bring my Pen Lights to do the Dueling Banjos for you when I get to HEaven!!! Love you Uncle Dick!!

My husband and I frequently went to dinner with Dick and Judy. Dick always drove, rarely taking main highways, usually on side streets and country roads. We called it the “Dick Riddle route.” To this day I use that phrase when traveling. Take the “Dick Riddle” route. You may surprised at what memories you make.

Dick and I go all the way back to First Grade at Marquette. I really liked playing with him through all the years and on into High School. When Dick and I were in 8th grade we wanted to play 9th grade football the next year so we sucked up to the coaches and became the Managers in 8th grade. Lots of Fun. He became an end and I was a terrible QB in 9th grade. Dick caught my one and Only pass for a touchdown. I have good memories with Dick and always enjoyed Judy's great smile. I wish you and your family God's strength thru this time.

We were lucky enough to live across the street from Dick and Judy for years. Dick was known for his immaculate lawn. I have fond memories of watching him ride his lawn tractor with a cigar. Dick was always willing to lend a helping hand. I have many examples of his kind heart. He would snowplow our driveway when Mark was at work and I was home with our small kids. He once saw that I was struggling bringing a TV into the house and immediately came over to help me. Our kids once locked themselves out of our house after school once. (Before having cell phones) The kids immediately went to the Riddles until I got home knowing they would be safe there. He is missed. RIP Mr. Riddle Love, Mark Rhonda Darren Danielle and Dylan
