Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Celeste Elinor Smith, age 80, of Mount Horeb, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, at St. Mary's Care Center. She was born on Jan. 10, 1944, in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Clarence and Mae (Dove) Smith.


Celeste graduated salutatorian from Mount Horeb High School in 1962.  She worked at many jobs over her early years before settling into the Insurance industry, from which she retired in 2021.


Celeste was a lover of nature and being outdoors.  She enjoyed watching the birds and other animals at her feeders and took great pride in all the plants and flowers she diligently cared for in the gardens and beds around her house.  Celeste was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan along with following University of Wisconsin Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Basketball.   She kept her mind sharp by doing crossword puzzles, and for several years she regularly played cards with dear friends.  She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored and doted on, as well as the annual visit from her nephew, Brian, his wife, Christine, and their daughter, Pauline.


Celeste is survived by her daughters, Jill (Tracy) Haag and Linda (Kevin) Hanson; son, Bret (Lori) Hoesly; granddaughter, Terah (Zach) Stackhouse; grandsons, Jordan Haag, Chris (Lori) Hanson, Nick (Molly) Hanson, Sam (Erika Sorenson) Hanson and Ben (Andrea) Hanson; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Myron Smith; and sisters, Julia Sutter and Elaine (Gary) Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mae; and beloved nephew, Craig Sutter.


A private graveside service will be held at Natural Path Sanctuary - Farley Center, 2299 Spring Rose Road, Verona.
