Obituary

MADISON / Cottage Grove - Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Hagen, age 85, of Madison / Cottage Grove, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, at Drumlin Reserve. She was born on Dec. 10, 1938, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Sanford and Alma (Olson) Hagen.

Betty graduated from Madison East High School with the class of 1957. She enjoyed a career at American Family Insurance that spanned 35 years working as a Claims Processor and then as a Supervisor. Over the years she participated in bowling and golf leagues with co-workers, who were also good friends. When there was a party or an “event,” she was the first one there!  She also loved dancing, playing cards, shopping and occasionally, gambling. She loved and collected clothes, shoes, jewelry and pretty things, and she was always impeccably dressed. Betty always looked forward to going out to dinner with family and friends and enjoying a Brandy Old Fashioned. In her 70s she finally planned her dream vacation, traveling to Hawaii and visiting four islands while there.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Carryn (Ellen Rust) Hanson and Linda (Jeff Scheberl) Hudson Scheberl; grandchildren, Dawn Hudson (fiancé, Gary Wolter), Katrina Hudson (fiancé, Tyler Long) and Katricia (Josh) Greeno; great-grandchildren, Torin Faye Greeno and Taelynn Elizabeth Long; special niece, Kendra Papcke; sister-in-law, Sue Hagen; and many other dear nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Robert Lewis Hanson Jr.; grandson, Torrence Michael Hudson; sisters, Ella (Ray) Volk, June (Frank) Trapino, Ardys (Bob) Bergman, Marilynn (Jerome) Suter and Patricia (Don) Papcke; and brothers, Ronald (Marietta) Hagen and Richard Hagen.

A celebration of life is being organized for a future date.

I am so sorry for your loss of Betty and this late sympathy message, Carryn and Linda and Families. I met Betty at the "over 50" club at the VFW in Monona. We all enjoyed the comaraderie and friendships built at that Club and for the V to let us have so many activities there, where we felt safe and protected. Betty loved the friends she met there, and looked forward to the many events the club hosted there, including routine weekly music, and various other activities the club members would attend. She was always dressed so beautifully and professionally and loved having that place to go to with friends. She was proud of her fairly new condo as I recall, that she perhaps was never able to return to after some traveling and medical issues. The Club dissolved, COVID hit, and the members sadly didn't have the Club of organized activities since, that I am sure is missed by many of us. When difficult times in life, or changes in our lives, that takes us from our usual routines, family and friends esp after Retirement, Clubs like this, or many family and friends who continue their friendships with routine get-togethers at events, etc. are so very important to continue long, happy, healthy, safe and successful years in Retirement. May your many good memories with Betty give you all strength to carry on in life as she would want you to do, and to continue contributing to this world as we are each meant to do, and that the world needs us all to do.
