MCFARLAND - James F. “Jim” Howery, age 89, of McFarland, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at Milestone Senior Living in Stoughton. He was born on April 6, 1934, in Madison, the son of Frank and Loey (Shepherd) Howery.


Jim graduated from East High School in 1952, where he excelled in tennis and baseball and was involved in various choirs and theater. In his earlier years he was the summer city recreation champion at shooting marbles.  


Jim was united in marriage to Betty Johnson on Nov. 15, 1952. He was employed as a sales manager for Research Product Corporation for 45 years until his retirement in 1997. Jim was on the McFarland School Board and was a top contributor to the McFarland Education Foundation. He was also a member of the McFarland Lions Club, the Evansville Country Club and assisted with delivering Meals on Wheels.


Jim will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and being an avid Wisconsin sports fan. He and Betty loved to watch the kids in sporting events and support their teams.  They enjoyed traveling annually to Arizona and Florida and made many friends along the way. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his friends on his three golfing leagues. He also enjoyed reading, especially James Patterson books.


Jim was a friend to everyone, and he will be greatly missed.


James is survived by his sons, Craig (Sharen) Howery, Steve Howery (partner, Lorna), Tom (Terri) Howery and Jeffrey (Shannon) Howery; grandchildren, Erinn (Joe) Kolk, Peter Howery, Cassie (Josh ) Galbraith, Ben (Stephanie) Howery, Alex Howery, Chloe (Michael) Medenblik, Lydia, Seth and Eli Howery; great-grandchildren, Nora and Joseph Jr. Kolk, Rylee and Dakota Howery, Violet and Brooks Galbraith, and Aurora Medenblik; step-grandchild, Elizabeth (Chris Loy) Bratz; great step-grandchildren, Preston (Morgan) Bratz and Wyatt Loy; sister-in-law, Virginia Baldwin; sisters, Doris Caruso and Judy (Dave) Pierce; step great-great-grandsons, Malakai Bratz and one on the way, Carter Thomas; and many nieces and nephews. Jim is further survived by his faithful companion, Duffy.


He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; grandson, Lukas Steven Howery; sister, Alice Tillie (Vernon "Bud") Dodge; and brothers-in-law, Jim "Vinny" Caruso, John Baldwin.


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024. A celebration of life will follow at THE GREEN LANTERN RESTAURANT, 4412 Siggelkow Road, McFarland. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12 noon until the time of the service on Sunday.

We remember the spring time in Arizona. Uncle Jim and Aunt Betty and spring training. The game we shared on the grassy slope but just as much or more fun was the Friday night fish fry’s at a little hole in the wall restaurant. Best fried perch in the valley. We will remember you. Love to all the cousins.

Howery family, I’m so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed being around and having conversations with Jim. He was at home the last time I spoke to him, but he still remembered me or fooled me into believing he did. Such a fun person to be around. Our deepest sympathies, the Carl Murphree family.

We met Jim and Betty when they would come to Az for Spring Training. Everyone looked forward to their yearly arrival. They became instant friends with all of us . I was able to see Jim, a few years ago, at the facility in Wisconsin. He may not have remembered me, but he smiled and his and his eyes lit up when I talked about the great times we all had in AZ. He and Betty were truly loved by all of us. The attached picture was the last time we saw Jim in AZ. We were at our favorite watering hole where we all first met. Yes, he is sucking in his gut to impress the ladies. He was a great friend and an awesome guy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family and friends.

My thoughts to all of the family. Jim - ‘ Mr. Howery’, was so very much a part of the neighborhood and our families growing up. He always had a positive attitude and always had time for you. Pretty sure I speak for all those kids when I say, thank you for being part of our journeys. RIP❤️
