Obituary

MADISON - Thomas C. Royston, age 77, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on July 8, 1946, in Madison, the son of Cal Royston and Kay (Puder) Royston Schultz.


Tom graduated from Madison West High School in 1964.  After graduation, he went on to UW Madison where he was pursuing a degree in History.  He worked for Badger Cab Company for over 40 years, retiring as the personnel manager.  He married Bev Royston on Sept. 23, 2006, at Lake Edge United Church of Christ.  In his retirement, he volunteered at Meriter Hospital for over 12 years in many areas including cuddling babies in the NICU. He also worked as a standardized patient with the medical students at UW Hospital.


Tom was an avid Brewers and Badgers sports fan. He enjoyed going to Door County and weekend getaways with family. He loved cocktail hour(s), grilling, cooking, reading and working out.


Tom is survived by his wife, Bev; son, Bryan (Janelle) Royston; daughters, Emily (Alex Muehlbauer) Royston and Brittany (Tim) Bancroft; grandchildren, Cody (Ashley) Royston, Bailey (Troy Showers) Royston, Sunny Royston, “Baba” to Madison and Everly Bancroft; great-grandchildren, Logan and Emery Royston; sister, Susan Ullsvik; step brothers, John (Patti) Schultz, and Alan Schultz; brothers-in-law, Bob (Susan Brackett) Eisele, James (Georgia) Eisele, John (Tansel) Eisele, and Gerald “Jerry” (Jackie) Hiley; sister-in-law, Marianne Young; former wife of 28 years, Donna Royston; feline companion, Beau; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; step dad, Otto Schultz; paternal grandparents, Stella and Richard Royston; maternal grandparents, Helen and George Puder; and brothers-in-law, Tom Ullsvik and Tom Young.


A Time of Sharing will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024.  Please bring your stories to share. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, dedicated to Tom’s memory, to UnityPoint Health, supporting the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or the Littlest Angels Program. Links to both organizations appear below. The family wishes to thank the staff at UnityPoint Health ICU and UW Hospital TLC for all their wonderful care and support given to Tom and his family, and all the special people who provided support over the last two weeks.
