Obituary

MADISON - James B. “Jim” Northrop, age 82, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, after a lengthy illness.


He was born on Nov. 18, 1941, in Madison, the son of Clarence V. and Ruth E. (Kleinsmith) Northrop. Jim graduated from Monona Grove High School.  Following high school, he enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Navy.


Jim worked as a telephone lineman for Ma Bell Telephone Company (now known as AT&T) for over 30 years before retiring and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He also supported the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C. and was part of the planning committee for the Stoughton Veterans Memorial in Stoughton. Jim enjoyed sailing, going to car shows and reading about history (especially war stories).


Jim is survived by his daughter, Stacy (Gen. Johnny K. Davis) Davis; son, Steven Northrop; seven grandchildren, Connor Northrop, Whitney Davis, Madia (Eric) Burchfield, Charles Davis, Johnnie Davis, Rachael Davis and Penny Davis; great-grandchildren, Troy, Luke and Ethan Burchfield; sister, Jan Morgan; and brother, Glen Northrop.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ruth Northrop; brother-in-law, Jim Morgan; and sister-in-law, Sandra Northrop.


Keeping with Jim's wishes, private family services will be held.
