DEFOREST - John Felix Modjeski, 83, of DeForest, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023. John was born on Sept. 23, 1940, in Winona, Minn., to Felix and Vera Evelyn Modjeski.

John graduated from Cotter High School in Winona, Minn. He received his bachelor’s degree in education and his master’s degree in administration from Winona State University.

John began his teaching career in Rochester, Minn., and was on the faculty at Winona State as a supervisor of student teachers. From there, he and his family moved to Cumberland, Wis., where he was a dedicated principal at Cumberland Elementary School for many years. John loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and going for walks at his favorite spot, the Upper Yahara River Trail. Special adventures with family and friends included fishing in Canada and seeing his first Broadway show in New York City. John and his wife, Jane, enjoyed traveling, particularly to Rosemary Beach, Fla., Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Banff National Park in Canada. John loved watching football and was an unwavering Vikings fan. He also shared a love for all Wisconsin Badgers sports. As a grandfather, John enthusiastically supported his grandchildren in their individual endeavors and was proud of all their accomplishments.

John will be missed by MANY! This earth has lost a good, good man and Heaven has gained one! John, his wife Jane, along with my wife and me had many, many laughs together until we all of us were left crying from laughing so hard! We’ve sipped wine and have traveled! The times wine-sipping and traveling together are priceless! I will miss my daily texts with my good friend, Johnny Boy. I’m keeping the faith that someday, we’ll meet again, laugh again, cry again and text again!❤️👍🏻🫶🏻😢

Our deepest condolences to John's family. I've known John since moving in his neighborhood in 2017 and enjoyed several golf outings with the Clay Street golf gang. John was a benevolent individual...he'll be missed. Bernie Mulheron

Ed and I have known John and his family since we moved to Cumberland 45 years ago. Our kids went to school with his girls and we got to know him a little more. When his daughter Sara married our son Mark, we became family. We enjoyed many holidays and summer events with each other. Then of course we became grand parents together celebrating birthdays, going to sporting events, and enjoying each others company. Those years will always be in our memory book.
