Obituary

STOUGHTON - Edward Eugene “Ed” Walther, age 81, of Stoughton, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2023, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on Jan. 21, 1942, in Waukegan, Ill., the son of Conrad and Doris (Faust) Walther. Ed was united in marriage to the love of his life, Judith Ann “Judy” Hauge on June 13, 1959, at Lake Edge Lutheran Church.

Ed attended Edgerton schools and then moved to Madison. His home was right next door to Chief Auto Parts which is where he began his lifelong career in autobody work.

During his career, Ed worked at many different shops.  He managed Kayser Ford in Madison which led him and his partners to start McFarland Truck and Autobody. They were well known in the area because Ed always wanted the job done right on whatever he was working on. When Alzheimer’s set in, he was no longer able to do the job he loved and had to retire after 30+ years.

Ed always loved the lake which is where he and Judy made their home. At the lake they loved having parties with their friends and family, boating and water skiing. Ed enjoyed the outdoors and hunting, loved going on family camping trips, NASCAR racing, bowling, and trips to Nashville. He was a proud member of the Packer Backers for many years.

Edward is survived by wife of 64 years, Judy; children, Brenda (Richard) Moen, Jerry (Julie) Walther, JoAnn (Shane) O’Malley and Cheryl (Nick) Bartels; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Matt) Fischer, Kayla (Jim) Muhlenhaupt, Robert (Kenzie) Walther, Mike (Molly Nevins) Walther, Jordan O’Malley, Tamia O’Malley, Avery Bartels and Hattie Bartels; three great-grandchildren, Zoey, Emma and Cain; sister-in-law, Kathy Hauge; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Sharon) Hauge; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepdad, Lyle Farris; half-brother, Ken Farris; and several aunts and uncles.

A funeral service will be held at MCFARLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5529 Marsh Road, McFarland, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, with Kelli Schmit presiding. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. @ Jackson St., Stoughton, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Memorials may be gifted in Ed’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or Agrace HospiceCare.

Thank you to Agrace HospiceCare for all their help at home and in the hospital and to Regina Broyle of Stoughton for her help with in-home care. I am so appreciative to my family and friends for all of their support through his journey.

Butch(Ed) was such a hard working man. He would do anything for anyone. Always willing to put others needs ahead of his. Butch and Judy raised the most thoughtful caring kids. I am so proud to be able to call him my cousin. I enjoyed my “little” talks with him, right up to the few days before his passing. He would always be sure to ask me where I was. We would somewhat talk about the weather, or the lake, or if there were ducks out there. I would always be sure to ask if Judy was making him something to eat. Many times he would answer with”no” and then chuckle. Butch you were one of the greatest! My parents loved you very much. Just like another son. Now you are at peace, no suffering. Until we all meet again….. Pam
