COTTAGE GROVE - John Charles Mohar, age 84, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Meriter Hospital. He was born on August 29, 1941, in Eveleth, Minn., the son of John and Gladys (Wallisto) Mohar.
John graduated from Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Minn., in 1959 and went on to complete his training at the National School of Meat Cutting in 1962. He married Genevieve “Gen” Novak in 1964. John proudly served in the Minnesota and Wisconsin Army National Guard from 1963 to 1969.
He worked as a meat cutter for Millins Supermarket for 26 years, and later continued his career in the UW-Madison Physical Plant for 21 years, retiring in 2010. In addition to his full-time work, John spent more than 30 years doing part-time painting and carpentry, skills he took great pride in and shared with others.
John is survived by his wife, Gen Mohar of Cottage Grove; his children, Greg (Lisa) Mohar of Madison and Julie (Chris) Bachman of Channahon, Ill.; sister, Kathy Shaw of Colorado; and grandchildren, Kara Mohar, Hartley Mohar, Brianna “Bri” (Hunter) Prescott, Paige (Scottie) Nolan, Morgan Franzen, Ryan Franzen and Ben Bachman; and great-grandson, Carter Nolan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and John; and brother, Richard Mohar.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 434 N. Main St., Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, with Father Mark Foley presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday. Final resting place will be Highland Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to donate to a charity of their choice.
