Obituary
BLACK EARTH - Harold L. Handel, age 92, passed away on Dec. 20, 2023, at Heartland Country Village in Black Earth, the area where he was born on May 20, 1931. He lived in Black Earth from 1943 to the present.
Harold is survived by his two brothers, Phil (Mary) of Middleton and John (Joan) of Deerfield. He was predeceased by his brothers, Paul, Art, Louie, Virgil and Donald; and his sisters, Rose Scheele and Thresa Schulenburg. He is also survived by 20 nieces and nephews.
Harold was a boiler operator at Mendota until his eyesight failed him and he went on disability. He was completely blind by 1975 but was able to live alone in his house in Black Earth until about a month ago.
A big thank you to the people of Black Earth for watching out for him. A special thank you to Bob and Renee Bratton for the many kindnesses they showed him over the years. Also thank you to his nephew, Richard Handel, for all of those trips to doctor appointments etc. and to Dr. Hupp and the caretakers at Heartland Country Village.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 113 E. Division St., Mazomanie, at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023. Burial will take place at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Blue Mounds. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Harold’s name to Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
