FITCHBURG - Touane Baccam, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at his home in Madison, surrounded by his beloved family. Touane was born on Feb. 10, 1943, in Muang Muoi, Tai Dam (present-day Thuan Chau, Northwest Vietnam) to Cam and Nhau Baccam. He had a total of 17 siblings and 10 are still alive, living here and abroad. Touane is survived by his wife, Chansy Baccam, 13 children, 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. From Vietnam, he, his parents and siblings were escorted to Laos by the French with other Tai Dam families and called Laos home for 20 plus years and having a family of his own.
With Laos’ impending takeover in 1975, Touane and his family made their way across the Mekong River from Laos to Nongkhai, Thailand, along with his siblings and their families and also with other Tai Dam families. After staying in Thailand for 10 months, in August of 1976 as part of Governor Ray's program to bring the Tai Dam refugees, his family was able to come to the United States and live in Marshalltown, Iowa, after a brief stay with his brother's family in Grundy Center.
Touane worked at Benson Optical in Marshalltown and moved to Green Bay, Wis., in 1989, then in 1991 he and his family moved to Montana for a position assisting refugees. In 1993 his family moved to Madison and worked as an interpreter with the court and health system.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. @ Jackson St., Stoughton, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
