Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Thomas Stephen “Tom” Marling, age 70, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at his residence in the Vermont Township with his wife, Wanda (Vroman) Marling, by his side. He was born on Nov. 15, 1953, in Madison, Wis., the son of William R.  Marling and Elizabeth (Leyse) Marling.

Thomas attended Shorewood Elementary School, Sherman Middle School, Madison East High School and UW-Stevens Point. He married Wanda Vroman on May 20, 1995, at the home they built together at Rimrock Farm in the Vermont Township.

Tom was an owner, past vice president, secretary, treasurer and board member of Marling Lumber Company. His career spanned more than 40 years of the company’s 119-year existence. He was a member of the American Daylily Society and a board member of the Wisconsin Daylily Society. He was extremely proud to have been chosen as one of the Wisconsin Daylily Society 2026 Sponsored Region 2 Tour Gardens.

Tom loved his family and friends, his Rimrock Farm, and flowers. He had many friendships from bowling, golf and pool over the years. He was forward thinking with work and meticulous at work and at home. In retirement, he had a special group of friends he met with multiple times per week. They and so many more close friends and relatives will miss him dearly.

In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by his step-daughter, Andrea Parks; grandson, Carson Parks; brother, Bill (Marci) of Naples, Fla.; sisters, Cynthia of Green Bay, Wis., and Marilyn (David) Atwell of Madison, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Lloyd and George (Chery) of Fitchburg, Wis.; sister-in-law, Mary Vroman of Baraboo, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as many friends and his dog, Hawk. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Gordon and Rosalie Vroman; brother-in-law, Larry Vroman; and dear son-in-law, Dave Parks; as well as a wonderful pack of rescue dogs.

My most vivid memory of Tom is us shooting off his REMCO Johnny Reb Cannon in his house on Dartmouth road. He always had the best toys!

Tom was a good friend, thoughtful, fair hardworking and wonderful Wisconsin Daylily Society (WDS), Board member. He will be missed! I enjoyed working with Tom for several years at our WDS West Ag gardens, Annual Daylily Sale digging/preparation and actual Sale days. When ever he would order anything such as garden plant markers, calendars, etc., he would always drive over to my house in his late Mother's Lexus in person with his payments, rather than just putting an envelope in the mail. It was always nice to see him drive up and have gardening/life conversations with him. I was so looking forward to seeing how his Daylily gardens/designs and cultivar plantings would grow and turn into a stunning showcase ~ tour garden for our WDS sponsored 2026 American Daylily Society (ADS) Region 2 Summer meeting. I hope that they have Daylilies in Heaven... Rest In Peace Tom! Steven King, WDS President

I was lucky to get to know Tom and share some great times with him. My memories will always be full of laughter and happiness. At the same time I am truly sad to know that we will not be making more memories. I’ll miss the Tool Shed
