Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Peter Donald Strube, age 52, passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023. He was born on May 21, 1971, in Milwaukee, the son of Donald Strube and Nancy Sommerfeld. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Church on Oct. 28, 1995, in Waukegan, Ill.

Peter earned his B.A. in Nursing from Luther College in 1994 and his Master’s in Nurse Anesthesia from St. Mary’s University in 2006. He went on to earn his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Rosalind Franklin University in 2017 and his MBA from Edgewood College in 2019.

Peter retired from the U.S. Army Nurse Corps after 21 years of service, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He deployed four times, which included service in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned the War on Terrorism medal, the Enduring Freedom medal, the Mobilization Armed Forces Reserve medal, the Iraqi Freedom and Global War on Terror medal, and held numerous certificates of achievement, appreciation, and training from the United States Army.

Dr. Strube was an Assistant Professor at Newman University School of Nurse Anesthesia and was a developer of the pharmacology CPC Modules for multiple CRNA education programs. His teaching background included serving as an Assistant Program Director at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, an Associate Professor at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, and an Assistant Professor at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Peter loved his family more than anything, he loved Christmas, Bill’s Pizza, hockey, a good conversation, and never shied away from what he believed.

He lived by his favorite quote by Martin Luther King Jr., "If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but by all means, keep moving."

Peter is survived by his wife, Rebecca; sons, Noah Strube and Alexander Strube; daughter, Sarah Strube; parents, Donald Strube and Nancy Sommerfeld; two sisters, Shannon Strube and Nicole (Troy) Cross; niece, Josie Cross; and nephew, Chance Cross. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gordon and Betty Strube, and Robert and Marcella (Fosterling) Sommerfeld.

A memorial service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 315 E. Main St., Mount Horeb, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. Visitation will be held at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service on Tuesday.

My heart felt sorrow and wishes to his Family. I met Peter through Alabama chapter AANA. He spoke often at our meetings and was always a wealth of information to our anesthesia practice! I was honored to listen to his wealth of knowledge and experience: his service to our country, his anesthesia practice, and the devotion he had for his family. Thank you for sharing him with so many. May God’s Peace and Strength be with you. Peter will not be far from your hearts and may he never be forgotten for all who had the honor to meet him. Lisa Eleftheriou, CRNA Trussville, Alabama

I worked with Peter at the Madison V.A. Hospital, and I have a really great pic of him with a colleague. I’ll get looking for it. He was always smiling, upbeat, and provided such a meaningful service to his comrades and our veterans. Sending sincere condolences to his entire family. The world has lost a really great guy.
