Obituary

MADISON - Roger Planton, age 90, of Madison, formerly of Sheboygan, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge. He was born on April 25, 1933, in Sheboygan, Wis., the son of Anton and Christine (Turk) Planton.

Roger graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1951, where he starred on the varsity baseball team. He received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1955. It was at UW where he met his future wife, Patricia Ann Sullivan. They were married on June 9, 1956, in Ashland (Wis), and settled in his hometown of Sheboygan.  In recent years, he and Patricia became snowbirds and escaped the cold by spending winters in Florida from 1996 to 2020.

Roger enjoyed a 38-year career as the head pharmacist and store manager for Roenitz Fessler Drug Store, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Holy Name Parish, Sheboygan, and served as the president of the parish council. He was active in many pharmacy organizations at the local and state levels, served as president of the Ullr Ski Club and the Horseshoe Lake Association in Manitowoc County, and served on the board of directors of Paradise Park in Largo (Fla).

In his free time, Roger enjoyed traveling, making it to all 50 states (46 with his family). After retirement he and Pat travelled the world, loved to cruise, and also enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Horseshoe Lake.  He loved visiting casinos, reading Jack Reacher books by Lee Child, and golfing where he once scored a hole-in-one. He had many hobbies including being a self-taught sailor, woodworker, lover of snow and water skiing, and a fan of camping. However, his favorite moments were those spending quality time with family and friends at the cottage, where he loved to fish, swim, and go boating.  He also started and enjoyed a favorite Planton tradition, the annual Thanksgiving morning family football game at Vollrath Park. (affectionately known as the “bunny bowl”). He was an avid card and board game player, including games of cribbage, sheephead, and Wizards & Jesters.  He was a devoted Badger, Brewer, Bucks and Packer fan.  He was a Green Bay Packer stockholder and season ticket holder for 30 years.

Roger is survived by his wife, Patricia; five children, Paul (Kim), Patrick (Laura), Peter (Sara), Peggy (Mike) Arnold and Penny (Chris) Muldowney; 16 grandchildren, Matthew Planton (Holly Allo), Daniel (Kelly) Planton, Christopher Planton, Meredith (Sam) Spencer, Jacob Planton, Liz (Bradley) Frias, Kate (Luke) Schroeder, Allison Planton, Craig (Emily) Planton, Hailey Planton, Brian (Gina) Arnold, Bridget (Tyler) Markel, Nathan Muldowney, Marcus Muldowney, Lydia Muldowney and Natalie Muldowney; nine great-grandchildren, Maddie and Eliot Planton, Everleigh Spencer, Alvaro and Isabel Frias, and Rownan, Briar, Greer and Marek Planton. He is also survived by nieces Nancy (Rick) Lee, and Judy (Louis) Daw. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Christine (Henry) Heibing; and great-grandchild, Patrick Joseph Schroeder.

In Loving Memory of ROGER PLANTON. Roger Planton affectionately asked me to call him Dad P., when he, Mom P. and family invited me to live with them for a year as an exchange student. He was a father figure in a country new to me, and he was the best in his class. Dad P. was a very generous person. He shared abundantly, he shared without reserve. This I remember well. He was funny, witty, lighthearted, and his playful spirit made any of life’s moments more enjoyable, less heavy. His presence really made anyone just happy to be there, in the moment, happy to be alive. (To be teased by Dad P. actually meant you were important to him in the best way. He made me laugh so much. Never a dull moment with him.) Dad P. was also the best role model of Adulting. I observed he was diligent at work, diligent with business at home, and diligent at being a solid responsible citizen. He and Mom P. voted at every election, they did not argue who was best, for what, end of conversation. I learned this is the wisest way to live in this country. Everything under him was in order, on time, in place, now it was time to play and play he did! He was game for just about everything! Be it card games, sports, cooking, baking, even sports commentary. He was very present in all he did, his attention was focused on the person and on the task. It was very obvious to me that he loved Mom P., he loved his children, he loved his ever growing family, he loved his friends, he loved life. I feel so deeply fortunate to have had the amazing opportunity to live with Dad P. and Family for a time. It was short in duration, but the lessons learned and the love received are ever lasting. I am heartbroken and very sad for his passing. ROGER PLANTON was LOVE PERSONIFIED, and he will live forever in my heart. Brian and I share in your grief and we extend our deepest condolences to Mom Planton, Paul and Kim, Patrick and Laura, Peter and Sara, Peggy and Mike, Penny and Chris, their children, their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends. With Much Love, Brian and Marie Johnston Melbourne, Florida
