Mary Sutter

MOUNT HOREB - Mary Frances Sutter, age 94, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at Whispering Pines Assisted Living, Plover, Wis. She was born on Sept. 16, 1929, in Marinette, Wis., the daughter of Martin Krulatz and Ethel Oliver.   

Mary was raised with eight siblings in Walsh, Wis., a small community in Rural Marinette County. Mary graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1947. Following graduation, she worked for the City of Marinette as a Deputy Clerk. In 1960, Mary relocated to Madison, Wis., and worked for the City of Madison in the Clerks office. Mary left the workforce after meeting and marrying the love of her life, Ronald Sutter, on Feb. 27, 1965. They settled in Mount Horeb. Mary returned to the workforce after her children graduated from high school by working as a Record Support Clerk at Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS) for 15 years.   

As a young adult, Mary enjoyed spending time with her young nieces and nephews. As Mary and Ronald raised their family, Mary enjoyed various activities including baking Christmas cookies and her famous frosted pumpkin Halloween sugar cookies known throughout the neighborhood. Mary also enjoyed gardening and canning, painting and sketching, playing the piano, attending Madison’s concert on the square and art fair. She was an active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church along with being a Girl Scout Brownie Troup Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. Mary also attended adult education classes including sewing, computer basics, and tax preparation.   

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; three infant children, Martin, Andrew and Jayne; her parents; mother and father-in-law, Odilo and Kathryn Sutter; seven siblings, Mildred Bero, John Krulatz, Theresa Hosack, Joseph Krulatz, Matilda McElhatten, Veronica Chaney and Peter Krulatz; and sister-in-law, Carol Sutter.    

Mary is survived by her children, Rodney Sutter of Plover, Wis., and Helen (Patrick) Martin; grandchildren, Michelle Martin and Daniel Martin of Fairfax, Va.; sister, Margaret Esser of Mount Vernon; brother-in-law, Richard (Vickie) Sutter of Mount Horeb; sister-in-law, Jean Sutter of Mount Horeb and Betty Lou (Dale) Endres of Cross Plains; and many nieces and nephews.   

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 109 S. Sixth St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, with Father Robert Butz presiding. Burial will be held at St. Ignatius Calvary Cemetery in Mount Horeb. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Whispering Pines Assisted Living, ProMedica Hospice-Central Wisconsin, Cancer Center at Marshfield Medical Center at Stevens Point, and UW Health Carbone Cancer Center. They would also like to thank Father Juan Pedro Robles of St. Bronislava Catholic Church, Plover, Wis., Father Robert Butz and the CCW of St. Ignatius Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel, Mount Horeb, Wis., and the staff at Gunderson Funeral Home.
