Obituary

STOUGHTON - William Leo “Bill” Hye, age 94, of Stoughton, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023. He was born on April 6, 1929, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Virgil Hye and Florence (Cully) Hye. Bill graduated from Aberdeen High School, and shortly afterwards he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.  


Bill graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Business. On Oct. 22, 1955, he married Jacqueline C. Miller in Aberdeen, S.D. For over 30 years he was the manager of the Leath Gallery Furniture Store on Madison’s West side. He and his wife, Jackie, owned the Montgomery Wards store on Main Street in the 1980s. After he semi-retired, he was a salesman at the two Stoughton furniture stores, first working with Janet and Rudy Silbaugh at their U&S Furniture store and then with the Bob Jensen family.


Bill was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His enjoyment was spending time with his family and enjoying travel after retirement with Jackie. He was a proud member of the Stoughton American Legion post.


Bill is survived by his daughters, Laurie (Stuart) Slinde and Mary Ellan (Jeff) Silbaugh; son, David Hye; grandchildren, Daniel Heckel, Robert (Cassidi) Dahlk, Adam Dahlk, Ben Silbaugh, Sarah (Tim) Soderholm and Megan Hye; seven great-grandchildren; and nephew, Rick Hye. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Jacqueline.


There will be a celebration of life after the holidays.

I loved your Dad so much, Mary Ellan, Laurie and David! He welcomed me into the clan and became a surrogate father figure to me in many ways. So many memories of growing up with you all, and your Mom and Dad were at the center of them. Thinking of him brings a smile. I always picture him with a twinkle in his eye. Sending love to you all.
