MCFARLAND - Carol Elizabeth Bevins Shier passed away peacefully, at the age of 93, on Nov. 3, 2023, with her children at her side. Carol is survived by her children, Lizabeth Shier (Richard) Herlich, Andy (Gina) Shier, Peter (Elizabeth Goble) Shier, and Laura (Rodney Maack) Shier; grandchildren, Cory Shier, Lacey Herlich (Ryan) Hall, Zachary Herlich, Jesse Maack, and Erik Maack; and great-grandchildren, Blake and Kayce Hall, and Michael and Jack Goble. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John B. Shier; parents, Jesse (Al) and Cecilia Bevins; and sister, Barbara Bevins. Carol was the last remaining relative of her extended paternal and maternal families.


Carol was born on Sept. 21, 1930, in Chicago, Ill. She and her family lived in Beverly, Ill., and later in Hyde Park, Chicago. Carol graduated from Lawrence College (now University) in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. She worked at Toni Hair Products Company, helping develop Toni’s first home permanent products. Shortly after their wedding, Carol and John moved to Owen, Wis., where John was a teacher and coach at Owen Withee High School. In 1963, the family moved to Edgerton, Wis., when John took the position as principal of Edgerton High School.


Carol had various jobs while raising their children and managing the home. She worked for the Parker Pen Company, was a substitute teacher, and was a field interviewer for the U.S. Census Bureau.


After John’s retirement in 1990, Carol and John bought a winter home in Gold Canyon, Ariz., where they enjoyed golfing, being near son, Andy, and his family, and making new friends. Their home in McFarland kept them close to cherished friends in Edgerton and southern Wisconsin and their son, Peter, and his family. They continued to enjoy golfing, visits from children and grandchildren, and traveling to Door County in retirement.   


Carol’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cherryvale Place Assisted Living and the caring physical therapists and nurses at Alpine Fireside Rehab, both in Rockford, Ill. We are eternally grateful for the entire Home Instead Madison staff and caregivers who enabled us to bring Mom home, and Heartland Hospice, especially Kate, who guided all of us with compassion and care through Mom’s peaceful transition.

We were friends of Carol and John for many years. We golfed with them at home and in Arizona over the years. Another mutual passion was our Cocker Spaniels. Memories are many and happy. We shared losing our husbands and did our best with our new life and advancing ages. The family is going through one of life’s saddest times ,but your memories of mom and dad will always comfort you. John and Carol came into our lives about 18 years ago. I met John on a golf outing. We struck up a friendship that soon became a bond. We were blessed to have these two wonderful people be a part of our lives. We enjoyed visiting them in Gold Canyon and on numerous dinners. They touched our lives in such a positive and meaningful way that we will carry their memory with us always. I often speak to John when I’m on the the golf course saying “John if I make a bad shot it’s my fault, if I make a good one it’s yours “. I miss my friends.

Carol will be remembered dearly by her condo members in McFarland. She loved her flowers and added more to her garden each year. Carol was always a very positive, uplifting person, and a lively and interesting friend and neighbor in our condominium. She loved neighbors stopping to chat with her on her deck. We will miss her!
